What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a genuine job with an accompanying assessment and skills development programme. It is a way for individuals to earn while they learn gaining valuable skills and knowledge in a specific job role. The apprentice gains this through a wide mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practice new skills in a real work environment. Apprenticeships benefit employers and individuals, and by boosting the skills of the workforce they help to improve economic productivity.

  • Employer Responsibilities

    • You must give your apprentices an introduction to their role and provide on the job training

    • You must work with us to identify how the programme can best meet the needs of your apprentices and the business

    • You must ensure learners gather the practical work-based experience to enable them to gain the evidence for their portfolios and to ensure that there is an adequate link between on and off the job provision training

    • You are responsible for the wages of your apprentices (minimum £6.40 per hour)

    • You must be available every 6-8 weeks to review the learners’ progress

    • You must provide a safe working environment complying with current health and safety legislation

    • Allow your apprentices 20% of their contracted hour for off the job training, this could be done through attending day release at our training centre. If you feel this would be issue, please discuss this with a member of our Apprenticeship Team who will endeavour to meet your needs.

    • You must have a contract of employment with the apprentice to cover the duration of their apprenticeship as a minimum.

    Can my current staff do an apprenticeship?

    Yes, if you would like to up skill your current workforce, this can be done. Staff with existing job roles that match the target Apprenticeship Standard can undertake an Apprenticeship programme. All that is needed is for the employee and employer to sign up to the Apprenticeship programme with us.
