Get started with accessibility features on AirPods? ›

If you have AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max, you can adjust the accessibility settings to suit your mobility or hearing needs. Go to Settings > Accessibility > AirPods. If you have multiple AirPods, select one.

Open Settings and find Accessibility

Once in Settings, scroll down and find Accessibility. In here, scroll down the long list to find the section for Hearing options. In this section, you can find many ways to adjust the volume and hearing options for your iPhone or iPad, including when using AirPods.

To play and pause audio or to mute yourself during a phone call, press the Touch control on the stem of an AirPod. To resume playback or to unmute yourself, press again. To skip forward, double-press the Touch control. To skip back, triple-press the Touch control.

Make sure the 'Reduce Loud Sounds' toggle switch is set to 'off. You should also check Accessibility settings, as these can sometimes make your AirPods too quiet. Go to Settings, then Accessibility > Audio/Visual. Make sure the slider is in the middle between L and R.

On your device, open the Settings app. Accessibility Menu. Turn Accessibility Menu shortcut on. To accept the permissions, tap OK.

Accessibility features are designed to help people with disabilities use technology more easily. For example, a text-to-speech feature may read text out loud for people with limited vision, while a speech-recognition feature allows users with limited mobility to control the computer with their voice.

Go to Settings, select Accessibility, and then select Accessibility Shortcut. Select the feature you want to add to the shortcuts. To activate the shortcut, press the side button three times quickly. In older models, press the Home button three times.

Using the volume slider

The easiest way to change the volume of your AirPods is by dragging the volume slider in the app you're using, on your Lock Screen, or in the Control Center. You can also use the Digital Crown on your Apple Watch to change the volume on the Now Playing screen.

Alternatively, you can go to Settings > [your AirPods]. Tap the More Info button. next to your AirPods. Select the left or right AirPod to choose which AirPod you'd like to double-tap for Siri, playing or pausing audio content, or skipping between tracks.

An inward-facing microphone listens inside your ear for unwanted internal sounds, which your AirPods Pro or AirPods Max also counter with anti-noise. Transparency mode lets outside sound in, so you can hear what's going on around you.

You can amplify sound with Live Listen. Place your iPhone or iPad near what you want to hear, then listen through your AirPods. This can help you hear better in some situations—for example, when having a conversation in a noisy environment.
