TikTok is a great place to discover, create, and share content. But how does TikTok analytics work, and do you need it to succeed on the platform?
What is TikTok analytics?
TikTok analytics is a tool designed by TikTok. It helps you track and understand the metrics around your content, rather than just showing you a bunch of numbers.
With TikTok analytics, you can access key stats like followers and engagement, then use the insight to improve your content and boost your following in the future. How do I see my TikTok analytics?
As long as you have a TikTok Business account, you should be able to access your analytics. If you want to know how to see analytics on TikTok, head to your profile, tap the three dots, click ‘Creator Tools,’ then ‘Analytics.’
If you don’t have a TikTok Business account, you can make the switch for free. Tap the three dots on your profile again, go to ‘Manage Account,’ then under ‘Account Control,’ go ahead and hit ‘Switch to Business Account.’
How many followers do you need on TikTok to see your analytics?
There isn’t a minimum follower threshold to access TikTok analytics, but for some of the sections we’ll discuss later, you’ll need at least 100 followers. For example, you won’t get any insights from TikTok analytics’ Followers tab unless you have that minimum follower count.
How do I use TikTok analytics?
TikTok analytics is sliced into three manageable categories.
Overview
This section is a handy snapshot of everything that’s gone down on your TikTok. You can inspect granular graphs and charts that display follower growth, profile views, video views, the number of videos you’ve published, comments, likes, shares, and LIVE videos. You can track these stats over the last seven, 28, or 60 days, or a custom range stretching up to 60 days.
Within the Overview category, there’s an ‘Engagement’ section. This covers your likes, comments, and shares over a specific period.
Content
If you want to dig deeper into your TikTok analytics, there’s the Content category. This breaks down the data and analytics for individual videos you’ve posted, rather than showing you them as one giant blob. That means you can see what’s working, how different videos chime with people, and so on.
There’s some invaluable info tucked away in the Content tab, including:
- Total video views
- Total shares
- Total number of comments
- Total likes on a post
- Total watch time
- Average watch time
- Reached audience
- How many people watched the full video
- Traffic – where your video views come from on the platform
- Top viewer locations
These metrics are only available for the past seven days, though, so it’s good practice to check them regularly!
Followers
This tab reveals more detailed stats about where your audience is based, their gender, the dates and times when they’re most active on TikTok, the change in your follower growth, and the other videos and sounds your followers are checking out on TikTok. There’s also a handy graph that shows your profile views, either from the last seven or 28 days.
LIVE
If you have LIVE access, you’ll be able to use TikTok analytics with the LIVE tab. This provides nuggets of knowledge like new followers, total views, unique views, top viewer count, how many Diamonds (TikTok’s virtual currency, which viewers can gift you) you’ve earned, and more.
What time does TikTok update analytics?
TikTok analytics operates on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC – this is the time standard used by countries like the United Kingdom and Portugal.) So, keep that in mind when looking at trends and spikes in your content. If you’re doing great at 03:00 am your local time, you should check where those views are coming from – they’re likely from abroad!
How long does it take for TikTok analytics to update?
TikTok analytics breaks down activity across chunks of seven, 28, and 60 days, plus customizable periods. However, after your initial seven-day period following the activation of analytics, the numbers should constantly update, so you’re always receiving the freshest updates.
Why can’t I see my TikTok analytics?
TikTok analytics not showing? Sometimes, there’s a glitch in the Matrix. If you see two black cats and your analytics aren’t working, you could always try:
- Restarting your TikTok app. Yep, it sounds obvious, but sometimes it just needs a reboot like anything else!
- Checking TikTok’s server status. Sometimes, social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok suffer outages. In 2021, the hashtag #TikTokDown trended for precisely this reason. If your TikTok analytics aren’t working, check to see if it’s because of a broader issue like this.
- Ensuring your TikTok app is up to date. We all forget to update our apps every now and then, which can sometimes affect analytics. New updates might have better bug patches and fix any glitches, so head to the App Store or Google Play Store if you’re running out-of-date software.
- Clearing TikTok’s in-app cache. Cached data is basically information stored by a service, provider, or app to improve your online experience. TikTok stores this information to help serve you the best stuff via its algorithm, but sometimes the cache can corrupt your local TikTok files, or just become outdated. You can clear the cache and start afresh by clicking the three dots on the top-right of your profile, heading to ‘Settings and Privacy,’ then under ‘Cache and Cellular Data,’ hitting ‘Clear cache.’
