High levels of inflation, record household debt, and average salaries not keeping up with the rising cost of living are having a negative impact on Americans' overall feelings of financial security, according to a new MarketWatch Guides survey.

What are Americans' main financial challenges? Over the past two years, more respondents cited inflation as the reason for their financial difficulties than any other cause. Inflation reached a 40-year high of 9.1% in June 2022 and has yet to return to the Fed's target of 2%.

As living expenses in the U.S. continue to rise and wages struggle to keep up, it's unsurprising that Americans of all generations are having a hard time financially. For many, this means living paycheck to paycheck.

Nearly 40 million families, or 29% of the population, fall in the category of ALICE — Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — according to United Way's United for ALICE program, which first coined the term to refer to households earning above the poverty line but less than what's needed to get by.

A third of American adults in Northwestern Mutual's 2024 Planning & Progress survey said they don't feel financially secure. That's up from 27% in 2023 and the highest measure going back to 2012.

The root cause was excessive mortgage lending to borrowers who normally would not qualify for a home loan, which greatly increased risk to the lender. Lenders were willing to take this risk, as they could simply package the loans into an instrument they sold, passing the risk on to investors.

It may be that you have too much credit card debt, not enough income, or you overspend on unnecessary purchases when you feel stressed or anxious. Or perhaps, it's a combination of problems. Make a separate plan for each one.

Fear of insufficiency: Many people with money anxiety live with a fear that they'll never have enough money, regardless of their current financial status. This fear can drive compulsive behaviors such as excessive saving or being so frugal that they go without basic pleasures or necessities.

In general, people considered having only $878 available either in cash or a bank account to mean they were bankrupt.

One of the main culprits is consistently overspending. When the federal government spends more than its budget, it creates a deficit. In the fiscal year of 2023, it spent about $381 billion more than it collected in revenues. To pay that deficit, the government borrows money.
