Watch Out! These Colors Will Make Bees and Wasps Attack
What could what you wear be of interest to a bee? Based on the color you are wearing, you could be seen as a flower or a predator.
What difference does the color of your shirt make to an insect? Well, if you’re talking about bees and wasps, what you wear could make the difference between being seen as a predator, being mistaken for a flower, or simply being ignored.
The truth is that, like many creatures in the animal kingdom, bees and wasps have more complex eyesight than we do. They see things differently and can often be attracted to incorrect objects — including a person’s clothing — when flying around tending to its daily routine.
Many would say that they didn’t know bees had a preference for any color. What could what you wear be of interest to a bee? Based on the color you are wearing, you could be seen as a flower or a predator (which can cause you a painful sting). If you’re lucky enough, you won’t be wearing the colors that would identify you as either. This means the threat of them coming near you is minimized.
Stick to Lighter, Pale Colors
Some people like the smell of flowers and that is why they buy perfumes that smell like flowers. Now if you do not want to attract bees, we wouldn’t advise you to do this. In fact, we would suggest that you avoid this altogether. Their eyes created to identify the colors of flowers. The brighter it is the more drawn to it they are. The same is true with regard to the clothes that you wear.
If you are wearing bright clothes, you could easily be mistaken for a flower. If you use a laundry detergent with UV brightener, beware; you are almost certain to attract any bees that are around. We would recommend that you keep your clothing light and matted, pale colors.
Which Colors Make Them Attack?
You might not think of dark colors such as red or black as being aggressive, but when it comes to bees and wasps, it’s true. Darker colors will sometimes be interpreted as natural predators such as bears and skunks. The bees or wasps might not attack right away, but they will often be on the defensive, which means that even a small thing can set them off.
Even worse (and a little funny) is that bees and wasps will often go after your collar or cuff, depending on what you’re wearing, because these areas will be perceived as your weak spot. On a predator, these areas would be the eyes and other vulnerable places that the bees or wasps could take advantage of.
Wasps and bee stings can get swollen and in worse cases can cause severe allergies. There are some DIY methods that can be effective to treat a bee sting.
It would be great if there was a color that would actually repel bees and wasps, but it’s simply not true. However, there are some colors that will make you all but invisible to these insects. As mentioned before, those colors include pale or light shades.
For best results, wear white. This lack of color will typically make bees and wasps leave you alone. In fact, the next time you see a beekeeper, you’ll know exactly why the outfit is white.

What scent or smell keeps wasps away? Wasps have a strong sense of smell and dislike certain plants like peppermint, spearmint, basil, eucalyptus, cloves, geranium, thyme, citronella, bay leaves, and lemongrass. They are also repelled by vinegar, cinnamon, coffee grounds, and sliced cucumber.
Research published in the Journal of Pest Management Science found that a combination of clove, geranium and lemongrass essential oil successfully repelled wasps, and peppermint oil alone may also be effective.

Citrus - Citrus fruits like lemons and oranges can help deter wasps around your yard. Peppermint oil - Peppermint oil is one of the most effective essential oils for keeping wasps away. Citronella - Citronella oil is also effective, as it has a strong citrus smell that wasps do not like.
Common sources of attack stimulus for honeybees include alarm pheromone, vibrations, carbon dioxide, hair, and dark colors (Crane 1990). This makes sense because mammals, which are common predators of bees, are usually hairy, dark colored, and exhale carbon dioxide.
Citronella plants and oils can be used to deter bees so it makes sense that burning citronella candles would also work. These candles are easy to use and can be found at most grocery or hardware stores. They are effective against bees, wasps, and mosquitoes and work up to a certain range.
Avoid bee attention by wearing unscented products. Use an insect repellent to mask the scents. Natural repellents use citrus, mint, and eucalyptus oils. Dryer sheets also make effective insect repellents: tuck one in your pocket if you're hiking or place a few under your picnic blanket.

Are There Paint Colors That Repel Insects? Because bugs see colors on the UV spectrum, they cannot register hues of green or blue. Painters even use blue paint to repel bees and wasps. Painting your porch ceiling in a blue tone could repel wasps, leading to fewer wasp-eating spiders around your home!
Flowers that have evolved to attract bees as their main pollinators often are full of nectar and colored bright white, yellow, or blue. Bees cannot see the color red, which may be why flowers with red colors do not tend to attract bees.
Try to cover as much of your skin as you can. Wear gloves, protective glasses, long pants, socks, shoes, a long-sleeved shirt and/or hoodie, hat, and a scarf. Use your scarf to cover the lower half of your face rather than just wrapping it around your neck.
It is always best to take precautions to avoid attracting wasps and to prevent them from getting too close to your body. Wearing long-sleeved shirts, closed-toe shoes, and loose-fitting clothing can help reduce the risk of being stung.

Wasps learn to recognise the landmarks near their colony, but only defend it out to about three metres. If you are wearing white, yellow or another pale colour, the chances of further stings are significantly reduced.
