What months can be covered by COVID-19 rental assistance? ›

Offering up to 12 months of temporary rental assistance to low- and moderate-income households impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals who have previously received ERAP funding and require additional rent support, yet have not reached the maximum twelve-month limit, can apply for extra funding.

October 1, 2023 Important Update for ERAP Applicants

New York State ERAP applications stopped being accepted after January 20, 2023, at 9:00pm Eastern Standard Time. Individuals will not be able to submit applications, or complete applications that have been started but not submitted, after 9:00pm on January 20, 2023.

HRA will pay for a one-bedroom apartment that costs up to $1,312 per month. If your income is $1,000 per month and the rent on your one-bedroom apartment is $1,312 (the maximum rent) HRA will calculate 30% of your income as $300 that you should pay towards rent.

The ERAP portal will reopen on July 1, 2024 12:00 PM. If you previously attempted to apply but did not submit the application, that record will be deleted from the system and you must start a new application. You will not be able to access any incomplete application.

Rental Arrears Grants for Single Adults and Families

Grants are available for Public Assistance recipients and for those people ineligible for Public Assistance. Families and single adults are eligible. Visit 311 Online to contact the HRA Job Center in your area and apply for a rental arrears grant.

As of 9:00 pm EST on January 20, 2023, ERAP applications are no longer being accepted.

NYS Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP)

ERAP provides assistance to New York City households who are behind in their rent. Eligible low- and moderate-income households can get up to 12 months of their back rent paid, three months of future rent, and other assistance.

PROTECTIONS FOR TENANTS

Once a landlord accepts an ERAP payment, the tenant cannot be evicted for not paying rent during the period covered or for an expired lease during the 12 months following this payment.

The ERAP Program

The State began accepting applications for its second pandemic rental assistance program (following the COVID Rent Relief Program) on June 1, 2021.

Who is eligible for ERAP? You must be a resident of the District of Columbia, and your income must be less than 40% of the Area Median Income (AMI) according to the household size.

Emergency Rental Assistance

ERAP serves income eligible District households with children, elderly households and people with disabilities. The amount paid on behalf of eligible families depends on a household's income and available resources and is subject to certain limitations.

Households in need of rental assistance should call 1-844-691-7368 or visit otda.ny.gov for more information regarding the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance's (OTDA) forthcoming, federally-funded Emergency Rental Assistance Program to provide a rental subsidy to eligible households in New York State.
