Waygate (2024)

A Waygate is a gateway that allows entry into or exit from the Ways. Various Waygates exist throughout the Westlands.

Overview[]

Waygates are large structures of stone. They are designed with two pillars on a raised platform, with steps leading up to the platform.

When the Waygate is not opened, there is nothing between the two pillars, it's just open air. When the Waygate is opened, the path into the Ways appears between the pillars and can be walked through to enter or leave the Ways. The gateway will only stay open for a short time before automatically closing.

A Waygate can be opened by channeling, which is how Moiraine opens them to enter and exit the Ways.^[1] They can presumably be opened another way as done by Padan Fain, who possibly uses a small stone key shaped like a leaf.^[2]

Plot summary[]

Season 1[]

Moiraine has the party meet her at the Waygate near Tar Valon. She channels the Waygate open for everyone to enter, but it only remains open for a short period of time, and it closes with Mat staying behind. Moiraine intends to exit through the Waygate in the Blight nearest the Eye of the World, but they are attacked in the Ways need to leave sooner, so they exit through the Waygate near Fal Dara. They are followed by Padan Fain, who exits the Waygate after them. Moiraine informs Lord Agelmar that Trollocs are using the Ways, and he has the Fal Daran Waygate guarded.^[1]

After the attack in the Ways, Lan realizes that the Trollocs must have used the Ways to get to the Two Rivers undetected,^[1] indicating that there must be a Waygate somewhere near the Two Rivers.

Changes from the book series[]

Waygates are adapted from the gateways of the same name (book spoilers!) from the book series.

• Opening by key - In the books, Waygates are opened with a stone key shaped like a leaf. These are typically kept on the Waygate itself and can be used by anyone who knows how. These keys presumably still exist in the television series; in additional promotional images, Padan Fain is shown to have such a key, which he seems carry with him instead of leaving it at the Waygate.
• Opening by channeling - In the books, Waygates are not opened by channeling. Moiraine does channel through a Waygate to escape the Ways because the key had been removed, but this damages the Waygate and leaves it permanently open.
• Design - In the books, the entrance was an actual stone gate that opened outwards.
