Total Balance vs Available Balance (2024)

Learn the difference between your total and available balance to help identify your funds availability.

Total Balance

The previous business day’s ending balance, plus or minus certain limited transactions that are processed real-time. Balances from pending transactions that have not posted to your account may not be reflected. Your total balance also does not include checks or other transactions you may have initiated that have not yet been presented to the bank for payment.

Available Balance

Your available balance is the amount of money you can spend. You can use your available balance to withdraw cash, make debit card purchases, write checks and pay bills online. It’s useful to know your available balance so you don’t accidentally make one purchase too many that will overdraft your account.

You can check your bank account balance using online or mobile banking tools anytime, anywhere. You can also speak to a teller or follow the on-screen instructions of an ATM to check your balance. M&T Bank’s Customer Service can also be used to obtain your account balance. Call us at (800) 724-2440, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Why are my available balance and total balance different? ›

Your available balance is the total amount of money in your account that you can use for purchases and withdrawals, as it excludes pending transactions and check holds from your account balance. However, the available balance will not show checks that haven't been cashed or deposits which haven't posted.

How long does it take for total balance to become available balance? ›

It'll take a couple of days for that check to clear, and once it does, that money will be part of your available balance. Your available balance is a better figure than your current balance to judge how much money is in your account.

The current balance listed in your account includes any transactions that are pending but have not yet cleared. If you have $500 in your account and deposit a $1,000 check, for instance, your bank may only make the first $200 available immediately.

Why does my available credit and balance not match? ›

Your current balance is the total of all the posted transactions as of the previous business day. Your available credit is figured by subtracting your current balance (or amount already used) from your credit limit and adding any outstanding charges that have not posted yet.
