Most popular mints deal exclusively in high quality, authentic precious metal coins, bars, and rounds. Occasionally, we find small mint operations with serious quality control issues. For this reason, we decided to publish our own standards for comparing mints.
To find the best mints in 2024, investors should consider the following factors:
- Consistency. Consistent mints will produce high quality strikes for their coins or bars nearly every time. Manufacturers who routinely release products with milk spots, blemishes, or inconsistencies don’t meet this standard.
- Reputation. When it comes to buying and selling bullion, the reputation of a mint is everything. Mints like the Royal Canadian Mint imbue their stellar track-record into every product they make, which helps out when investors are ready to sell their coins for top dollar.
- Signature Products. Almost every mint on our ranked list offers some sort of signature product that helps to put them on the map. For the U.S. Mint, this product is the American Eagle. We tend to prefer mints that sell at least one famous line of coins that investors can’t find anywhere else.
Of course, we considered more than these factors when compiling our rankings for the best precious metal mints of 2024. But for investors struggling to compare mints, keeping these three elements in mind can be an excellent starting point.
Comparing Private Versus Sovereign Mints
Later in this guide, we’ll go over our picks for the best mints to buy gold from in 2024. Some of these fantastic mints are privately owned, which means that they aren’t operated by a sovereign government.
Before we get into the best mints, investors should understand the notable limitations of buying from a private mint. While private mints often sell beautiful bullion bars and rounds, they can’t distribute coins. Still, this mint is a fantastic option for investors who want to buy into one of the oldest coinage traditions on the planet. Many of the Monnaie de Paris’ popular coins feature rich cultural imagery, unprecedented detail, and uncompromising quality control.
8. Valcambi Mint
The second private mint on our list is Valcambi. Valcambi is an industry-leading producer of high quality gold, silver, and platinum bars. Their bars merge simplicity with beauty, giving lucky investors the best of both worlds.
We’re especially impressed with the quality standards associated with Valcambi products. It’s very rare to see any investor complain about their bullion bars, which are minted with an unprecedented consistency and standardization.

6. The Mexican Mint
The Mexican Mint has one major thing going for it: the Mexican Gold Libertad. For decades, the Libertad has been a premier option for investors who want to put their money into beautiful gold coins without paying an arm and a leg on premiums.
Gold Libertads are undeniably beautiful, and they often hold value well on the secondary market. Certain releases of the coin have appreciated considerably over the years, and fans of the Libertad come from all corners of the world.
Because of how much we love the Libertad, it was hard to put the Mexican Mint in 7th place – it could go much higher. However, some investors complain that releases for the Gold Libertad can be inconsistent.
It’s also worth noting that the Gold Libertad is really the only go-to product that the Mexican Mint has to offer. Compared to the mints in our top five, there’s just not all that much variety at the national mint of our neighbors to the South.
5. The Austrian Mint
Kicking off our picks for the top 5 best mints of 2024 is the Austrian Mint. Located in Vienna, the mint is most famous for its Austrian Philharmonics. These stunning coins are available in gold, silver, and platinum. Investors looking for a unique coin for their stacks should consider the Philharmonic.
The coin is heavily inspired by the cultural history of Vienna, which has played host to many of the most talented musicians and composers in the history of mankind. The coin pays homage to the Vienna Musikverein on the obverse.
