How much is a one zone bus fare in New Jersey? ›

If you're a senior citizen who is 62 years of age or older (65 years of age for travel to/from Metro-North stations) or a person with a disability, you're eligible to apply to NJ TRANSIT's Reduced Fare Program! As a member of our program, you can save 50 percent on a regular one-way ticket.

Children's Fares

Children (ages 5-11) save 50 percent and up to three children (ages 4 and under) ride free with a passenger paying any valid fare.

A fare is the fee paid by a passenger for use of a public transport system: rail, bus, taxi, etc. In the case of air transport, the term airfare is often used. Fare structure is the system set up to determine how much is to be paid by various passengers using a transit vehicle at any given time.

See NJ TRANSIT Bus Tickets for a complete list. You can pay cash (usually exact change) for a bus at any bus stop except Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York, where purchasing a paper or electronic ticket is required (you can use tickets at any stop, though).

Traveling by bus:

As you board, tap your contactless credit or debit card on the on-board validator. Provide the number of zones you wish to travel to the bus operator for the proper fare. Take a seat and enjoy your ride – it's that easy!

2023, c. 349. For the purposes of this act, a "senior citizen" is any person who has attained the age of 62 years on or after the effective date of this act, or the spouse of that person, or the surviving spouse of that person, if the surviving spouse is 55 years of age or older.

Buying tickets

Like all train companies*, you must buy a ticket before you board, or risk getting a penalty fare. Only undiscounted Anytime fares will be available from the conductor** - note that these are more expensive than purchasing before you travel.

Is my ticket refundable? One-way and round-trip tickets are not refundable. Remember, tickets will expire 30 days after purchase, so plan your travel accordingly.

If you live in England or Wales

If you live in London, you can travel free on buses, tubes and other transport when you're 60, but only within London. In Wales you can get a bus pass when you reach 60. Enter your postcode to: apply for a bus pass from your local council.

What age is free on trains? ›

Children under 5 years of age travel for free on most journeys but check with your train company to make sure. Please note, children under 5 who are travelling without a ticket may only occupy a seat that is not required by a fare-paying passenger.

Off-Peak Ticketing:

Under the new schedule, customers will be able to use off-peak round-trip tickets all hours except weekday mornings between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., and evenings between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. based on New York arrival and departure times.

Transportation cost refers to the expenses incurred in the process of moving goods, services, or people from one location to another.

Public fares are the opposite of private fares – which are discounted prices that are negotiated between airlines and air consolidators and are not published anywhere. As opposed to private fares, public ones constantly fluctuate according to the airline pricing strategy – a so-called dynamic pricing approach.

Fines & Points

A violation of these laws results in a $100 fine, and up to 15 days in jail or up to 15 days community service for a first offense. For subsequent offenses, violators can receive a $250 fine or more and up to 15 days in jail. Five points are added to a driver's record for each offense.
