Learn all about the best uses for hoppers in Stardew Valley!

Overall, you will have to figure out how to navigate around the lava while trying to reach the highest floor of the dungeon. Just like with Skull Cavern, the area adds a great new piece of end-game content that can add hours of gameplay. Below is everything you need to know before heading into the Volcano Dungeon for the first time.

Updated June 26, 2024 by Jacqueline Zalace: Looking to explore the Ginger Island Volcano Dungeon in Stardew Valley? We've updated the formatting of this guide slightly, as well as included a bit more facts to help you explore it to the fullest.

Does The Volcano Dungeon Have Golden Walnuts?

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (5)

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (6)Golden Walnut are spread pretty much everywhere on the island, and the Volcano Dungeon is no exception. Within the Volcano Dungeon, you can find 19 walnuts. Below, you can check out a brief description of them all.

  • Breaking Rocks (5 Walnuts)
  • Slaying Enemies (5 Walnuts)
  • Breaking Crates (5 Walnuts)
  • Opening a Common Chest (1 Walnut)
  • Opening a Rare Chest (1 Walnut)

These chests do not have a guaranteed location to spawn in, but you may come across one on any floor.

There are two additional Golden Walnuts that can be found in the Forge area, which is on the top floor. Here, there will be two trees; one near the entrance and one near the exit. By shaking these trees, you will get a walnut.

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (7)

Lastly, there are two more walnuts found at the left end of the initial lava river. Instead of using your watering can to cross, take a left, where you will come across a platform. Go through it, and you will find two Golden Walnuts.

How To Pay For Parrot Shortcuts

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (8)

The Volcano Dungeon is tough to navigate at first, but by paying Golden Walnuts, you can make things a bit easier. There are two parrots in the dungeon; this first can build a bridge to the entrance so that you can easily access the first floor at any time.

The second is found in the Dwarf shop and will give you a quick escape back to the entrance. Both of these shortcuts will cost five Golden Walnuts.

You will find the Dwarf shop on level five. Don't worry about missing this NPC, you will need to pass by to get to the next level.

If you don't have the Dwarvish Translation Guide, you will not be able to talk with the Dwarf.

Dragontooth Weapons

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (19)

There are a plethora of new items that can be gained from exploring this dungeon, including a set of Dragontooth Weapons. These cannot be crafted; instead, you will find them in chests within the dungeon.

Below, you can check out each type of Dragontooth weapon.

When you have a crit attack with the club, this is the highest amount of damage out of any weapon in the game.

How To Cross Lava With The Watering Can

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (23)

While sprinklers are the go-to item for farmers, the Volcano Dungeon gives the watering can a whole new use. The watering can must be taken into the dungeon in order to even get to the first floor. By using the watering can, you will create paths across the lava to move to new locations.

Later, we will go over the Forge at the end of the dungeon. Here, you can get the Bottomless enchantment, which makes your watering can pour out an infinite amount of water.

If you don't have this enchantment, we recommend bringing an upgraded version of the watering can, such as one made from gold or iridium. These hold more charges, so you won't have to refill them as often.

Enemies In The Volcano Dungeon

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (24)

There are all-new enemies to deal with inside the Volcano Dungeon. These enemies don't hit as hard as the ones in Skull Cavern, but they can easily overwhelm you if unprepared.

Below, you can check out each unique enemy in the dungeon.

The Volcano Forge

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (42)

There is a Forge inside the dungeon, but you will need to reach the top to use it. With the Forge, you will be able to upgrade your gear, as well as transfer stats.

Additionally, you will be able to change the appearance of your weapons and combine rings. Overall, the Forge is a great late-game location if you are looking to become a master of combat.

Most of the actions that are performed at the Forge require Cinder Shards, which can be found on the previous floors of the Volcano Dungeon.

Within the caldera, you will also be able to toss an Ancient Doll into the lava, which sets you on track to obtain Meowmere. This cute sword is a reference to Terraria.

How To Get Past Gated Doors

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (43)

One of the new features that might cause confusion is the addition of a gated door. These are pretty simple to unlock once you find the buttons. Each door will be on a floor with corresponding buttons, and you will need to push them all in order to proceed further into the dungeon.

This can be a rather easy or difficult task depending on the monsters in the area and where the lava pools are located.

Mushroom Floors

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (44)

There are strange floors that are both good and bad at the same time. The mushroom floor is filled with both Magma Caps and the False Magma Cap enemies that sit around waiting to attack you. The two can't be told apart, so you will need to be extra careful when picking up items.

The floor won't have any other enemies or items on it, so it's a great way to grab a ton of Magma Caps without exerting a ton of effort.

Island Floors

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (45)

Island floors are floors where there are small patches of land inside the lava pools. These can be especially troubling as things like switches are able to spawn on them. This is another reason why you need to take an upgraded watering can with you into the dungeon; with it, you won't get stranded across the lava.

When you do have the watering can, island levels can be easy to navigate but still a bit time-consuming.

Volcano Dungeon Floor Randomization

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (46)

The first time you venture into the Volcano Dungeon, you won't have the most variation within the floors. Once you make it to the very top (floor ten) at least once though, you will unlock 20 new layouts. These will randomly appear anytime you explore the dungeon in later runs.

It's also important to keep in mind that the dungeon will only reset once a day. This means that if you leave and come back a few hours later, it will remain the same; no new items or enemies will spawn. This is different from Skull Cavern and the Mines, which change when you leave.

How To Leave The Volcano Dungeon

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (47)

One thing that you will notice immediately is that it is a lot harder to exit this dungeon. Ladders won't appear on every level, which can be especially daunting when you are badly injured or running out of time.

If you don't have any shortcuts unlocked and you want to turn back, you will need to head backward through the dungeon, which can be a dangerous process.

It's highly recommended that you make and carry warp totems when going into the dungeon.

What Items Can You Loot From Chests?

Stardew Valley: Everything You Need to Know About The Volcano Dungeon (48)

With a new dungeon comes tons of new items. This ranges from Cinder Shards to rare Dwarven weapons. While exploring the dungeon, you will come across two chest types; common and rare. Below, you can see the items that can appear in both chest types.
