Silent clubstep is a 1.8/1.9/2.1 former impossible solo Extreme Demon level created, hack-verified and published by Sailent. It is a silent-level remake of the main level Clubstep and one of the most famous levels in Geometry Dash history due to the old version of it being previously deemed humanly impossible by many players. Due to its name and status as a 'Silent' level, it is most likely inspired by Silent Club.

The original version was widely considered impossible for many reasons. The inconsistency of the pre-drop prevented players from making any significant progress due to its near-frame-perfect timings and the fixed-hitbox straight-flying section. The mini-cube section following the dual has eight near-frame-perfect timings with awkward speed changes throughout. These eight jumps became known as the '8 Jumps of Hell' and inspired popular challenge levels such as final; destination.

In 2020, Silent clubstep was updated, nerfing many frame-perfect timings and bug-fixing gameplay segments that broke due to Update 2.1's physics. This version was verified and published by paqoe on 17 July 2022, after over 138,000 attempts, initially placing at #4 on the Demonlist before being shifted to #3 nearly a year after its verification, above Slaughterhouse. Silent clubstep received praise from players for its sense of accomplishment yet criticism for its gameplay and transitions.[1][2][3] A remake, Eternal Silence, was created in 2.1 and is set for an open verification.

2.1 fix and update[]

IcEDCave, a very skilled Canadian player who had made incredible runs on unnerfed Silent clubstep, came into contact with Sailent over Discord. There, they discussed the problems Silent clubstep had, such as orb masking issues, various skips and physics problems due to 2.0 physics changes, mainly affecting vertical ship movement. Sailent agreed to update the level to fix these problems and additionally added small nerfs to the level to make it no longer impossible.

The nerfs included changing timings to be possible on 60FPS and nerfing other already possible timings. They also added visibility to the 'lights-out' parts and nerfed the first ship segment to allow players to pass it with more consistency.

The level received another update a few months after the initial 2.1 update. However, this new update was relatively minor, only changing decoration and using toggle triggers to mimic orb masking in the ball initially using orb masking, as proper orb masking no longer works due to game changes.

Gameplay[]

  • 0-4%: The level begins with a cube section containing two frame-perfect timings, a blind jump over a quadruple spike and a visible jump over a spike pyramid, followed by a three-block wide orb spam.
  • 4-6%: The player enters a mirror portal into a cube dual in the dark with a frame-perfect corner jump and triple spike.
  • 6-10%: The infamous extremely tight ship segment with straight-flying, a slight bend upwards, then mirror, yellow gravity and half-speed portals midway into more straight-flying with slightly jutted spikes. This segment is considered the main obstacle in beating the level due to its inconsistency.
  • 10-25%: The player returns to normal speed, then down a ledge from the ship segment is a cube with four frame-perfect jumps, a two-block wide orb spam section into a mirror portal, then four more frame-perfect timings with low visibility and constant speed-, gravity- and mirror portals, before a transition featuring a Clubstep monster background decoration and a decoration reading "BYE!"
  • 25-34%: The drop of the level starts with a triple-speed mini-ship, with an immediate frame-perfect timing through the invisible teeth of a Clubstep monster, a trick second monster, then a mirror portal and moderately tight half-speed curved flying, another triple-speed timing through invisible monster teeth and another half-speed curved passage.
  • 34-42%: After a short mini-cube transition is a relatively easy normal speed mini-ball section that uses toggle triggers to mimic 'orb masking', a deprecated technique of overlapping multiple orbs in the same position to make a 'layered orb' and require each input to be buffered to avoid activating the underlying pink orbs.
  • 42-49%: Another relatively easy section featuring memory-based UFO gameplay filled with mirror-, size-, gravity- and speed portals.
  • 49-55%: A ship segment with a design that goes nearly completely dark partway through, requiring diagonal flying, pink orb timings and navigation through gravity, mirror and half-speed changes with little visibility.
  • 55-56%: A simple, brief ball section with invisible spikes.
  • 56-63%: A transitional break section with a memory-based cube featuring masked orbs that must be buffered in the order of the fifth blue orb falling up, the second blue orb falling down and then an unbuffered input for the third pink orb falling up.
  • 63-69%: An extremely difficult triple-speed cube and ball dual, both icons having to perform eight frame-perfect timings over quintuple spikes and one-block-wide gaps respectively, then a brief dual-cube where the player can stagger the individual icon jumps to avoid another frame-perfect timing. This is considered to be the hardest part of the level.
  • 69-71%: A brief mini-ball with the player's vision mostly obscured by erratic speed and mirror portals.
  • 71-77%: A mini-cube section containing the 8 Jumps of Hell, eight frame-perfect jumps with speed changes every two jumps, the first of which is obscured due to a mirror portal, before descending steps to the next section.
  • 77-79%: A simple upside-down ship segment containing three columns with spiked gaps, with the second being a trick where the player must slip near a hidden passage above.
  • 79-100%: A transition with a background Clubstep monster into a memory-based cube maze, navigated with the jump pattern +4, -1, +3, -2, +2, -6, +15, -10, +5, until the end of the level.

Trivia[]

  • The level cannot be copied.
  • The level contains 10,906 objects.
  • The level is 1m 27s in length.
  • The level was rated on 18 July 2022.
  • This used to be one of the most disliked levels in Geometry Dash.
    • It now has a positive like-dislike ratio. However, players continue to criticize the level for its unconventional gameplay and chokepoints, especially in the pre-drop, asymmetric dual, and the '8 Jumps of Hell'.[1][2][3]
  • The level was initially placed at #4 on the Demonlist on 11 August 2022, above Firework (#5) and below Sakupen Circles (#3).
    • This addition pushed Macabre into the Extended List and Missing Benefits into the Legacy List.
    • On 23 April 2023, eight months after Silent clubstep's (#6) placement, the placement of Avernus briefly pushed Silent clubstep out of the Top 5 of the Demonlist. The level was then moved from #6 to #3, above Slaughterhouse (#4) and below Avernus (#2).
      • This change pushed Abyss of Darkness out of the Top 5 of the Demonlist for the first time.
      • Due to this change, Silent clubstep was technically Top 1 for 47 days before Acheron was placed.
  • The level was ranked #69 in GDToday's 100 Greatest Levels of All Time list.
  • In 1.9, Sailent created a buffed and extended remake of this level called Sailent Clubstar. It uses the full song.
  • Because of Update 2.0, Nautilus2k (Sailent) made a new account for all his levels and transferred all the levels there. The author's name changed to SuperNautilus, so many considered the level deleted.
  • Zobros was the first player to beat this level in practice mode while recording.[4]
  • Sunix completed this level in practice mode in 495 attempts.[5]
  • Stormfly created and verified a redecorated, nerfed version called Silentium Gradas.
    • It was verified on 11 May 2018 and rated some months later, in November 2018, becoming the first rated version of Silent clubstep.
  • ZorroZ Zet made an infamous speed-hacked, nerfed and cut walkthrough of the level.[6]
  • vitesse, a user known for his GDBot showcases, uploaded an April Fools' video on Silent clubstep in 2019. The video stated he verified the original version after a fictitious three-year journey (starting from late 1.9) caused by a viewing of ZorroZ Zet's video with 635,000 attempts as a follow-up to his Orochi video.[7]
  • The level was not originally intended to be impossible, but was made so out of frustration after Sailent's save data was lost attempting to hack-verify the original version. Sailent then rebuilt and buffed the level to its current state, mainly focusing on the first 20% and the first ship.[8]
  • Sailent never intended the '8 Jumps of Hell' in the unnerfed version of the level to be 144FPS frame-perfect jumps, as he believed these jumps were possible on lower FPS as they were possible on 60FPS via practice mode. Due to this, he nerfed them back to 60FPS frame perfects as intended in the bug-fix update.[9]
  • paqoe previously held the world record run of 72.31% before verifying the level.[10]
    • paqoe also held the record for the best run to 100%, having done 9-100%.[11]
  • Zoink became the first legitimate victor on 16 August 2022.[12]
  • Vision, the fifth victor, has spent 821,027 attempts beating the level, making it the highest amount of attempts spent on beating a level at the time[13] and the current second highest, behind Josh's 842,888 attempts spent to beat Bloodlust.
    • He also beat it on Geometry Dash's 10th Anniversary.
  • According to the Demonlist, Silent clubstep is the hardest-rated level that does not exceed the default 40,000 object cap.
    • It is also the hardest-rated level to use a main-level song.
  • There is a much more decorated version of the level called 'silent clubstep new'. Although released to the servers, it is currently unrated due to no verification.
