How to Convert Satoshi to Bitcoin

If you’re new to the cryptocurrency world – or even if you’re not – you may not know or understand the relationship between satoshis and bitcoin. This tool explains what a satoshi is in relation to bitcoin, and also offers a handy guide for converting satoshis to bitcoin, or bitcoin or satoshis to other currencies.

What is a satoshi?

A satoshi is the smallest recognized unit of bitcoin (BTC). It is equal to 0.00000001 BTC. A satoshi is a small fraction of a bitcoin, much like one cent is a small fraction of a US dollar. However, unlike dollars and cents, where there are 100 cents in a dollar, there are 100 million satoshis in one bitcoin. One satoshi = one hundred millionths of one bitcoin. A satoshi is sometimes referred to as a “SAT”, in the same way that bitcoin is designated as BTC.

Satoshis have become more meaningful since the price of a single bitcoin has risen so high. Cryptocurrency transactions done with BTC are now much more likely to involve only a small portion of one bitcoin, whereas in the early days of bitcoin, when a BTC was only worth a few dollars, BTC transactions often involved several BTC.

Why is it Called a Satoshi?

The satoshi is named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator(s) of bitcoin. Satoshi wrote an article in 2008, “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System”, which was essentially the primary launch point for the cryptocurrency market. Satoshi’s article explained how to solve key problems that had stumped previous developers of cryptocurrency.

What is a Satoshi Worth?

What is a satoshi worth? Well, that depends. There is no set value for a satoshi. Unlike one US cent, which has a fixed value, the value of a satoshi depends on the ever-fluctuating value of one bitcoin. The price of bitcoin is quoted to the eighth decimal place (1.00000000 bits). Thus, each bitcoin can be divided into 100,000,000 pieces – and each satoshi represents just one of those pieces. As the value of bitcoin changes, so does the value of a satoshi.

Bitcoin Price and Trading Information

Right under the satoshi to bitcoin to USD converter tool, you’ll see a box that displays the current, real-time value of bitcoin in US dollars. This tool can be very useful for any cryptocurrency trader because it provides valuable real-time price information. In addition to showing the current USD price of bitcoin, it also shows – directly under the price quote – how much the price of bitcoin is up or down over the last 24 hours.

It shows the change in bitcoin’s USD price both in dollars and as a percentage of the bitcoin price from 24 hours ago. If bitcoin is up on the day, then the price change figures will be shown in green. If bitcoin is down on the day, then the price change numbers will appear in red. Also, right next to all the current price information, there’s an arrow pointing up or down to indicate whether bitcoin’s price is rising or falling over the past 24 hours.

On the right-hand side of the bitcoin price box, you can see the opening bitcoin price from 24 hours ago, the highest price within the past 24 hours, the lowest price within the past 24 hours, and the amount of bitcoin that was last traded. The “Last Trade” information can be especially helpful to crypto traders. If you see several large amounts of bitcoin being traded and the bitcoin price moving higher, that means that other traders are buying large amounts of BTC. Such large-scale buying indicates a strong uptrend that is likely to continue.

However, if bitcoin is only trading in very small purchase amounts, then that may indicate that it’s primarily only small, individual retail traders who are buying, rather than large institutional traders, which would indicate a weaker uptrend. Conversely, if bitcoin’s price is moving down on large-scale trades, then that indicates a strong downtrend that is likely to continue. All of the information in the bitcoin price box is refreshed and updated every second.

The Satoshi and Bitcoin Converter Table

The satoshi and bitcoin converter table is the next available tool on the Trading.biz converter page. The table shows you different amounts of satoshis, from one to 100 billion, and what percentage of one bitcoin they equal, shown in decimal form. For example, looking at the table, you can see that 100 satoshis are equal to 0.00000100 BTC, and 100,000 satoshis are equal to 0.00100000 BTC.

The figures displayed on the right-hand side of the table show the current US dollar value of the various amounts of satoshis listed on the left-hand side of the table. Like the information in the bitcoin price box, this information is continually refreshed and updated in real time.

You may have noticed that beside several of the BTC amounts shown there’s a notation – such as the notation “1 Bit / μBTC (you-bit)” on the line showing the bitcoin percentage represented by 100 satoshis. These notations reveal the names that have been given to certain amounts of satoshis, as follows:

  • 100 satoshis are known as a “you-bit”
  • 100,000 satoshis are called an “em-bit”
  • 1,000,000 satoshis are referred to as a “bitcent” (because it represents one-hundredth of a bitcoin, like one cent is one-hundredth of a US dollar)

Summary

The Trading.biz satoshi to bitcoin converter page offers you a wealth of information that cannot easily be found anywhere else, especially not all in one place. The satoshi to bitcoin to USD converter enables you to enter an amount in any of the three boxes and immediately be shown the equivalent amount in the other two boxes. The USD box also offers you the ability to select from any of several other currencies, such as the euro or British pound.

Our real-time bitcoin price information box shows all the relevant information about trading activity in bitcoin over the previous 24 hours, including the actual amount of bitcoin that was last traded.
