Powders and liquids in Hand Luggage | Air Europa United Kingdom (2024)

In order to protect against the threat of liquid explosives, the European Union (EU) has adopted safety measures that limit the amount of liquids or substances of similar consistency that passengers can carry with them when they go through airport security controls.

Safety regulations for liquids

Only small amounts of liquid are permitted in hand baggage. These liquids must be transported in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 ml. Each passenger can bring a maximum of 1 litre.

What substances are considered liquids?

Any of the following substances, or any substances with a similar consistency, can be considered liquids:

  • Water and drinks.
  • Perfumes, gels, creams, oils, and lotions, including toothpaste.
  • Aerosols, foams, deodorants, and other contents in pressurised containers.

You can buy these substances in stores at the airport (after going through security) or during your flight, and carry them as hand luggage.

You can bring medicines and baby food in your hand luggage for use during the flight. These items should be placed in a transparent bag and must be presented separately at security.

Alcoholic beverages

The alcohol content must not exceed 70%.

Alcoholic beverages contained in sales packaging with an alcohol content of between 24% and 70% may be transported in containers no larger than 5 litres, with a total limit of 5 litres of alcohol per passenger.

Drinks containing 24% alcohol or less (including non-alcoholic beverages) are not subject to any restrictions for transportation in the aircraft hold. However, these items are subject to the following conditions:

  • They must be contained in packaging that does not exceed 5 litres (total volume). The characteristics of approved packaging are:
    • Package of 3 bottles: 38 x 35 x 11 cm
    • Package of 2 bottles: 38 x 24.5 x 11 cm

The transport of more than 5 litres of liquid per passenger is subject to approval by Air Europa.

Air Europa does not accept any liability for the breakage of liquids or fragile items in checked baggage, even if the items are transported in special packaging.

Olive oil

The transport of olive oil is restricted on Air Europa flights to prevent spillages that could damage or endanger the aircraft.

Olive oil will not be accepted on Air Europa flights unless the following conditions are met:

  • Bottled olive oil can only be transported as checked baggage.
  • 5% of the bottle must be empty to avoid leakages when under pressure.
  • Passengers must sign a disclaimer at check-in and pay the corresponding fee if the baggage allowance is exceeded.

Packaging:

  • The container must be placed in a strong, waterproof, hermetic plastic bag with a resealable zip or fastener.
  • Then, the bag must be placed in a second strong, waterproof, hermetic plastic bag with a resealable zip or fastener.
  • Finally, the item must be placed in a labelled, sturdy box with a lid and an internal protective layer (e.g., paper, bubble, foam).
  • The package must be clearly marked with a "Fragile" label.

Limitation of liability:

  • Air Europa cannot guarantee the admission at customs of olive oil imported or exported on an aircraft.
  • Air Europa does not accept any liability for any container damage or leakage that may occur during the baggage handling process.

Safety measures for powdered substances

For safety reasons, on flights to the USA, passengers are forbidden from transporting powdered substances of 350 ml (12 oz.) or more in their hand luggage in the passenger cabin.

Powdered substances of any amount can travel in checked baggage. Examples of powdered substances: flour, sugar, ground coffee, spices, powdered milk or baby formula, cosmetics, etc.

Exceptions: Substances subject to medical prescription, baby food, human remains and Duty Free products transported in the corresponding sealed STEB bag (Secure Tamper Evident Bag).

These measures have been put in place by US authorities. For further information: www.tsa.gov

Airport safety standards

For a quick and effective security screening, passengers must:

  • Place all liquids inside a transparent bag, separated from their hand luggage, before leaving them on the tray.
  • Remove their coat or jacket and leave it on the tray.
  • Separate laptops and other similar electronic devices with their covers and place them in the tray.
