Pokemon GO: Pokemon Box Storage Upgrade Guide (2024)

Niantic most recently expanded the Pokemon box storage cap in Pokemon GO in preparation for the June 2021 Community Day. The latest increase boosted the maximum Pokemon storage capacity to a whopping 4,500.

As the only way to increase box storage is through the in-game store, you can bet capping out at such an expansive capacity is going to be an expensive endeavor. Here's what you'll need to do to get right to it.

How To Upgrade Your Pokemon Box Storage

First of all, it's important to note that the box storage count includes duplicate pokemon, meaning each and every Pidgey, Ratatta, and other canon fodder all take up one slot each. So if you've wondered why your box storage fills up so quickly while you're just out hunting candies for certain species, that's why.

Luckily, upgrading your box storage is a simple three-step process.

1. Access the Main Menu via the Pokeball icon.
2. Select the Pokeshop (shopping bag icon.)
3. Scroll down to the "Upgrades" section and select "Pokemon Storage Upgrade."

Each box storage you purchase costs 200 Pokecoins and grants an additional 50 Pokemon storage capacity.

How To Get Pokecoins In Pokemon Go

Pokecoins can be purchased as microtransactions in the in-game shop. Under the "Pokecoins" section in the Pokeshop, you will find a handful of various offers.

• 100 Pokecoins - $0.99
• 550 Pokecoins - $7.99
• 1,200 Pokecoins - $14.99
• 2,500 Pokecoins - $30.99
• 5,200 Pokecoins - $62.99
• 14,500 Pokecoins - $159.99

Depending on how you choose to split up your purchases, getting the requisite 16,600 or so Pokecoins to finance maxing out your Pokemon box storage could cost you near $200 if you purchase them all from the in-game Pokeshop.

The only other way to earn Pokecoins without real-world currency is by defeating and defending Gyms. The payout for holding a gym works out to about six Pokecoins per hour. This earns you a measly maximum of 50 Pokecoins from one gym per day. But that's only if you manage to successfully defend the gym for the full eight hours and 20 minutes.

For every upgrade purchased, you'll need to defend four gyms for a full day to max out each one's Pokecoin output.

Note: Niantic was confirmed to be running localized tests in Australia to broaden the approaches to earning Pokecoins in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. These additional methods for earning Pokecoins include catching, evolving, transferring, buddy snapshots, and more. However, if these trials will ever roll out to more regions remains to be seen as the developers have recently been dealing with trainer blowback for revoking other adjustments made to accommodate the global pandemic.
