Do I need travel insurance for my P&O cruise?

Cruise travel insurance can give you peace of mind about the sorts of things that only happen at sea.

Cruise cover is also essential for P&O, who say: ‘It is a condition that you obtain travel insurance to cover the risk of needing medical care on-board or in a foreign country.’

Your standard travel insurance can cover you for medical emergencies, lost luggage and travel delays. All you need to do is let us know you’re going on a cruise when you take out your policy.

There’s no upper age limit on our policies, and you can get cover for most pre-existing medical conditions. Something you live with day to day shouldn’t stop you seeing the world.

What is Cruise Plus Cover?

Cruise Plus Cover gives you extra protection from cruise-specific mishaps. Add it to your Comprehensive policy to get cover for:

  • Missed port departure
  • Itinerary changes
  • Cabin confinement
  • Unused excursions
  • Cruise interruption

How much medical cover do I need for a UK P&O cruise?

For domestic UK cruises, P&O ask you to have a policy that covers you for £2m medical and repatriation expenses.

Our Comprehensive cover gives you up to unlimited emergency medical and repatriation expenses, so that’s another box ticked. Get in touch for proof of cover once you’ve bought your policy.

"Have used Staysure Travel Insurance for a few years. Have always found the staff friendly, helpful and courteous whether discussing a renewal or dealing with a claim. Would definitely recommend."

by John

"Very easy to find and go through quote and questions online. Price was better that the competition. Felt like I was human, particularly when answering questions on pre-existing medical conditions. Some other insurers make you feel that you are a third rate citizen because you have medical conditions."

by Chrissy

"Having used Staysure Insurance before they were my first choice when booking another trip. Very happy with the cover provided and how easy the website is to navigate. Would highly recommend."

People also asked

Your standard travel insurance policy includes a certain level of cover for cruises, including for medical emergencies, lost luggage and travel delays.

For extra cover, you can add optional Cruise Plus Cover to your comprehensive policy. This can cover you for lots of extra things that could go wrong:

Cabin Confinement cover can help you if you’re confined to your cabin, as instructed by the ship’s medical officer, due to illness.

Cruise Interruption cover can pay for your accommodation if you get ill and have to leave the ship for medical treatment. You can then re-join the ship at the next port.

Missed Port Departure can cover you if you arrive at your initial departure port too late because of things like vehicle breakdowns or motorway closures.

Unused Excursions cover can pay out if you can’t take part in your pre-paid excursions because you’re confined to your cabin after injury or illness.

•You can also be compensated for itinerary changes if a port is missed off your itinerary due to timetable changes or adverse weather.

You can get cover for most pre-existing medical conditions, as something you live with day to day shouldn’t affect your ability to travel.

You’ll need to declare and cover any pre-existing conditions when you take out your policy. We’ll ask you about symptoms, appointments and investigations within the last two years.

We’ll also need to know if you’ve had any of the following:
•Aneurysm
•Blood clots
•Cardiovascular or circulatory condition, e.g. a heart condition
•Hypertension (high blood pressure)
Raised cholesterol
Stroke

To be covered for COVID, you need to have had all doses of the COVID vaccine you’ve been offered, including any booster jabs.

You can also be covered if you can’t have the vaccine due to a medical exemption.

If you’ve refused any doses of the COVID vaccine or any booster jab, then you won’t be covered for COVID related claims.
