Money Is a Power (2024)

When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers…with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant…be careful that you do not forget the Lord. Deuteronomy 6:10-12 (NIV)

When the Israelites came into the Promised Land, they suddenly had the capacity to produce wealth. “When that happens,” says Moses. “You have to be very careful that you don’t forget the Lord who brought you out of Egypt.” Why? Because money is a power that can draw your heart away from the Lord.

Money has the power to absorb the mind, draw the heart, motivate the will, fire the imagination, soothe the memory, and dull the conscience. Money is, in effect, a rival god. It offers us many things. It makes demands and promises. It exercises power over the soul.

Jesus spoke about this: “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money” (Matt. 6:24).

Jesus is saying the same thing as Moses in the desert: Money is a power. It will try and master you by making promises and demands. It will attempt to take the place of God in your life, and if it does, it will keep you from fulfilling God’s purposes, because no man can serve two masters.

Where do you see money trying to exert its power over your life?
