What does Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan F cover?

With Medicare Supplement Plan F, you get the most complete coverage available. And because Plan F also covers costs in excess of Medicare-approved amounts, you may have no out-of-pocket costs for hospital and doctor’s office care.

Medicare Supplement Plan F offers Medicare benefits including:

  • Hospitalization: pays Medicare Part A coinsurance plus coverage for 365 additional days after Medicare benefits end
  • Medical expenses: pays Medicare Part B coinsurance—generally 20% of Medicare-approved expenses—or copayments for hospital outpatient services
  • Blood: pays for the first 3 pints of blood each year
  • Hospice care: pays Medicare Part A coinsurance

In addition to the basic benefits, Plan F also provides coverage for:

  • Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Medicare Part B excess charges (this is the difference between what a doctor or provider charges and the amount Medicare will pay up to Medicare's limiting amount)
  • Foreign travel emergency medical help (up to plan limits)

Plan F also has a high-deductible plan option. With this option, you must pay for Medicare-covered costs (coinsurance, copayments and deductibles) up to the deductible amount of $2,800 in 2024 before your plan pays anything. You must also pay a separate deductible ($250 per year) for foreign travel emergency services.

High-deductible policies have lower premiums, but if you need to use your benefits, you may have higher out-of-pocket costs.
