  • Planted 6 in one bed and 6 in another bed. Some lasted one year, but eventually all died. Even when first planted, the branches were more noticeable than the flowers. Also I noticed none of the low scoring reviews are published which is a shame considering reviews are part of how your plants come to the public in the first place.

  • One of my favorite plants. Beautiful and care free except for cutting back each year after leaves begin to emerge at the base of the plant. This may not happen until some time in June--long after other plants are growing and blooming. However, the wait is well worth it, as the plant then blooms profusely until frost--without requiring any deadheading.

  • The plant is growing beautifully, but is getting so big it’s starting to fall apart from it’s round shape. Should I cut it back, it also has a lot of dead heads right now?

  • Zone 5a here. Has come up for the past 3 years I had it. It is very slow to get started in the spring like most butterfly bushes. That said I planted Miss Molly last fall and it was pretty robust and shown its face pretty quickly this spring for a butterfly bush. I have higher hopes for that one. Anyway.... Blue Chip did not come back up this year. Almost June now, it would of been up by now. Darn. I hear the Purple Haze is a bit hardier. Gonna try that one next.

  • I planted this summer 2015, after my hubby trampled it and it was buried in snow this past winter, I didn't expect it to survive. This spring I see some green shoots off the base so it looks like it survived making it one tough plant. I can't wait to see how it grows this summer and what it does next year

  • Absolutely love this shrub. I have five planted with my daylilies and coneflowers. What a nonstop show, that will continue all of the way into October. The fragrance is wonderful. Am also seeing all kinds of butterflies. I do trim back back in the Spring when I see signs of growth.

  • It performs really well but it is much taller than advertised thus causing me problems where I placed it. Mine are 37-38" tall, not 24-30".

  • I purchased two of these amazing and delightful little babies! They are absolutely great! Grew (the first year) to their full capacity (30X30X30high); are beautiful plants (I received so many compliments); I had absolutely No problems with them-they are carefree; and I, the butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds loved them. I would recommend this plant to everyone !

How do you take care of a blue chip butterfly bush? ›

Even in warm climates, plant them where they get no fewer than 6 hours of sun. Butterfly bush need perfect drainage. Their roots are sensitive to rotting, and if they spend any amount of time in wet soil, they can be set back or even die.

What is the lifespan of a butterfly bush? ›

    Native substitutes for Butterfly Bush

For sunny, open garden or landscape plantings, try Sweet Pepperbush, also called Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia) or Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica). For wetter soils, try Buttonbush (Cephalanthis occidentalis)—a food source for moths—or New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus).

How long do Buddleia last? ›

Buddleia usually bloom continuously throughout late summer and fall, stopping only with the first frost. Removing spent flowers will keep the plant looking neat and encourage additional blossoms. To deadhead, cut the stem back to the first set of leaves, several inches below the flower.

Do Buddleia have deep roots? ›

Buddleia, or butterfly bush, is a fast-growing species that can overtake and crowd out native plants if not controlled effectively. Buddleia has deep roots and produces a lot of seeds, which allows it to spread and take over an area easily.

What happens if you don't cut back a butterfly bush? ›

But without regular pruning, butterfly bushes can become sparse, and flowering can diminish, leaving next to nothing for pollinators. So keep pruning to keep the butterflies coming to your garden for years to come!

How do I keep my butterfly bush blooming all summer? ›

You need to deadhead it: Deadheading works very well when it comes to enticing new blooms on the butterfly bush. Once the blooms start to look dry and slightly withered, it starts to look a bit sad, and you can give the shrub a chance to push out another round of blooms with some thorough deadheading.

Where is the best place to plant a butterfly bush? ›

Light: Butterfly bushes grow and flower best in full sun. They will grow fine in part shade, especially in warmer climates, but their flowering may be reduced. Soil: Butterfly Bushes are not particular about the soil conditions, as long as it drains well.

How do you prune a lo and behold butterfly bush? ›

Step #2: Prune above healthy new growth & remove stems

To prune your butterfly bush, make an angled cut above where you see large leaf buds or new healthy growth is emerging. Since butterfly bush blooms on new wood, the bigger the bud you're cutting back to, the more vigorous growth you can expect!

Does a butterfly bush need a trellis? ›

I would suggest giving it support with a trellis or something similar. Avoid pruning it now as your garden visitors will not reap its nectar benefits. Come next spring, prune it back to 12 to 24 inches. As it starts to grow again, this should help the plant stand tall on its own.

Do butterfly bushes like full sun? ›

Light: Butterfly bushes grow and flower best in full sun. They will grow fine in part shade, especially in warmer climates, but their flowering may be reduced. Soil: Butterfly Bushes are not particular about the soil conditions, as long as it drains well. Poorly-drained soils can cause root rot.

What is the tallest butterfly bush variety? ›

Winter Flowering Lilac (Buddleia asiatica) is our tallest Buddleia. It easily grows to 15 feet and perhaps a bit more. The white flowers are smaller and less showy than the flowers of a Buddleia davidii, but their fragrance is well worth it.
