Jan 26 - Best Buy to Provide Free E-waste Recycling at all California stores. Best Buy plans to expand its consumer electronics recycling program to its 1,006 U.S. retail stores on February 15, 2009, including the 68+ stores in California.

There are no store drop-off fees in California. Stores in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan accept TVs (49” and smaller) with the $29.99 drop-off fee; customers in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan will be given a $30 Best Buy gift card as reimbursem*nt for the store drop-off fee.

The Covered Electronic Waste (CEW) Recycling Program

The Covered Electronic Waste Recycling Program (Program) provides all Californians with convenient recycling for unwanted electronics. CalRecycle receives and evaluates applications from prospective collectors and recyclers to participate in the Program.

California enacted the Electronic Waste Recycling Act (Act) of 2003 (SB 20, Sher, Chapter 526, Statutes of 2003) to establish a funding system for the collection and recycling of certain electronic wastes.

In California, retailers charge consumers an advance recycling fee (ARF) of $8-25 when they purchase covered electronics, which goes into a fund to pay for the collection and recycling of devices. The ARF enables consumers to recycle end of life electronic devices for free.

At its launch in 2009, the chain required consumers to buy a $10 store card to drop off recycling. But last November, Best Buy dropped that fee. Today, the program generates two streams of revenue. First, Best Buy takes a cut from its recycling partners.

Founded by John Shegerian, ERI is the world's largest privately held recycler of electronics, recycling more than 275 million pounds of e-waste annually.

Check for television recycling programs and e-waste facilities in your area where you can drop off TVs and other electronics. They may also offer a pickup service.
