Is an Akita Right For Me? - Adopting - Midwest Akita Rescue Society (2024)

Is an Akita Right For Me? - Adopting - Midwest Akita Rescue Society (1)All dogs require kindness and love, but Akitas require a special measure of patience and respect. They are not “easy” dogs, and they don’t do well with erratic or excitable behavior from humans. Akitas require a loyal, steady owner. They will come to respect owners whom they see as trustworthy and safe. And they will be profoundly loyal in return.

If you are considering adopting an Akita, please first ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do I have space for a dog in my home? Do I have an adequate fence?
  2. Am I willing to groom a dog who sheds a great deal – multiple times per year?
  3. Can I afford to take a dog to the veterinarian regularly?
  4. Do I have children under 8 years of age?
  5. Should my dog be willing to allow a small child to hug and kiss him?
  6. Should my dog follow my orders?
  7. Do I plan to take my dog to places where there are many other dogs?
  8. Do I expect my dog to live outdoors full-time?
  9. Do I have the time and resources to devote to teaching my dog basic household manners?
  10. Do I want a dog who accepts all other pets?
  11. Do I have the resources to take my dog for annual vet visits?
  12. Will I provide monthly heart worm preventives for life? Flea and tick medications?
  13. Am I willing to take my dog on daily walks? To provide daily fun playtimes?

If you answered YES to questions 1, 2, 3, 9, 11, 12, 13 and NO to questions 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 – an Akita may be a good choice for you. If not, you might be better off with another breed. Please pay attention to your true beliefs, to be fair to the dog you bring home – and your family.
