Can I use WD-40 on my Leatherman? ›

Cleaning can be done with a low viscosity oil (e.g. WD-40, Liquid Wrench, CRC 3-36), which helps force out moisture trapped in the joints. Buff stained surfaces with a polishing cloth or non-metallic abrasive (e.g., Scotchbrite pad or soft bristle brush).

If debris or sticky substances have accumulated between the blades, your Leatherman may also be cleaned in a mild solution of detergent and water. To remove tar and similar substances, clean your Leatherman with turpentine or other mineral spirits.

I find a thin lubricant such as teflon (PTFE) or silicone spray to work best for loosening Leatherman parts. Any lubricant will work for this, just avoid using motor oil or WD-40. The tolerances of the hinge are quite tight, so to help the lubricant seep in I open and close the hinge, bending it sideways gently.

Your Leatherman product should be cleaned (with CRC or similar), dried (with a soft cloth) and re-oiled periodically to inhibit rust and corrosion. This is especially true if you use it in a damp or marine environment. After cleaning, re-oil pivoting areas with a light machine or penetrating type oil (such as WD-40).
