Fallout 4: Every Brotherhood Of Steel Rank (2024)

Highlights

  • Becoming a Knight may lead to better perks, traders, and Power Armor within the Brotherhood.
  • Progressing to Paladin involves lengthy quests like Show No Mercy and Blind Betrayal, but leads to unique perks like a personal room.
  • Achieving the top rank of Sentinel requires completing key quests and grants the exclusive T-60 Jetpack mod for your Power Armor.

While fans still argue for their favorite game within the series, like Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4 is nonetheless a solid title with plenty of NPCs to romance or recruit, large settlements to build, a surprising number of things to do after you beat the game, and of course, a few different factions you can side with.

Fallout 4: The Best Sniper Rifles, Ranked

Dominate Fallout 4's wasteland from a (relatively) safe distance.

While the Brotherhood Of Steel only offers four different ranks you can progress through in Fallout 4, despite having a wide variety of NPCs that reveal a much deeper, militaristic hierarchy, like Scribes or Lancer-Knights, we'll walk you through the benefits and privileges afforded to each position, in detail, within this power-armor loving faction.

If you've never finished the Brotherhood of Steel questline, this is your polite warning that the information below goes into deep detail about every quest, rank, and the notable rewards and outcomes associated with this faction.

4 Initiate

Because Every New Recruit Starts At The Bottom, And Rhys Hates You

Whether it was after you obliterated Kellog in Fort Hagen during the Reunions main story quest, and were immediately greeted by the Brotherhood's massive blimp, the Prydwen, or you helped Paladin Danse fight off waves of Ghouls from Cambridge Police Station, you get acquainted with the faction one way or another.

To earn the rank of Initiate, you have to help Paladin Danse with two required Brotherhood quests: Fire Support, located and completed at Cambridge Police Station, and Call to Arms, which takes you to Arcjet Systems to find aDeep Range Transmitter. Including items that can be found during these quests, becoming an Initiate provides a number of notable rewards, such as:

  • 650 base EXP from both quests.
  • A minimum of 50 caps; more if you persuade Danse to hire you as a mercenary.
  • Danse's personal laser rifle, the Righteous Authority, which makes critical hits deal even more damage.
  • Two Fusion Cores, two Nuka-Cola Quantums, one Stealth Boy, a Fat Man launcher, and a Junk Jet from Arcjet Systems.

The 15 Most Powerful Builds In Fallout 4, Ranked

Fallout 4 has heaps of builds to play around with. If you're going for the most powerful ones, you've come to the right place.

While becoming an Initiate doesn't grant you many privileges within the Brotherhood itself quite yet, it paves the road for knighthood, which provides the most benefits, perks, and access to a variety of traders when compared to every other rank; don't give up, push a bit harder for a promotion.

3 Knight

Numerous Upgrades And Privileges Fit For The Position

The Lost Patrol quest is entirely optional and not required to become a Knight, although you may want to do it for the rewards.

You receive 350 base EXP, the Survivor's Special pistol if you convinced Paladin Brandis to return, and either 200 caps from Danse or an excellent combat armor chest piece from Lancer Captain Kells.

To become a Knight, you have to do a few things. First, as a part of the Semper Invicta quest, you have to agree to join Danse's recon team, help Knight Rhys cleanse a part of the Commonwealth, and find an important technological relic for Scribe Haylen.

Beyond this, all you have to do is complete the Shadow of Steel quest, which involves triggering the Prydwen's arrival from the rooftop of Fort Hagen after killing Kellog, listening to Military Frequency AF95 on your Pipboy, and attending Elder Maxon's address.

Now that you've earned the title of Knight, you gain a number of incredible perks, privileges, and rewards, including:

  • Access to three convenient, beneficial NPCs:
    • Proctor Teagan; quest giver, weapons and ammunition trader.
    • Proctor Quinlan; quest giver, cap farming through Technical Documents.
    • Knight-Captain Cade; sells medical supplies and treats ailments.
  • A brand-new set of T-60b Power Armor with Brotherhood paint and decals.
  • The option to have Danse as a companion.
  • A minimum of 750 base EXP from both, aforementioned required quests.
  • A cornucopia of containers to loot for ammo, medical supplies, and other goodies, like four Mini Nukes.

If you're more of a pragmatist, rather than someone who's carefully evaluating the Brotherhood's impact on the Commonwealth, becoming a Knight is a relatively quick and easy way to set yourself up for success. Also, this might be a good time to plan out your perks for the mid to late game.

2 Paladin

Was It Worth Gaining Your Own Quarters And Improved Power Armor?

Becoming a Paladin involves a lengthy string of quests, although some of them aren't that time-consuming. First, you have to complete Tour of Duty, which involves meeting four NPCs on the Prydwen. It's not that interesting, but at least it grants 300 base EXP.

Second, you'll have to complete Show No Mercy, which involves peppering Super Mutants on Fort Strong from the skies with a Vertibird's minigun, securing the fort's interior after you've landed, and speaking with Elder Maxson once the job is done.

Third, once you've figured out how to get into The Institute after scouring Kellog's memories, and getting some help from Virgil in the Glowing Sea, you'll have to complete From Within, which tasks you with finding Doctor Madison Li, and convincing her to rejoin the Brotherhood.

Before you leave The Institute, make sure you load the Network Scanner holotope into one of the available terminals to complete the Outside the Wire quest; it'd be a bit awkward to have to come back.

Fallout 4: The Pros And Cons Of Each Faction

The Railroad, the Minutemen, the Brotherhood of Steel, and the Institute... who will you join in Fallout 4?

Next, you're going to have to scrounge the Commonwealth for a high-powered magnet, build fourelectromagnetic actuators in the Boston Airport, locate a stockpile of nuclear bombs at Sentinel Site Prescott, and activate Liberty Prime to complete the quest Liberty Reprimed.

Finally, the last quest you'll have to complete to become a Paladin is Blind Betrayal, an often messy, sad, and shocking twist in the Brotherhood questline for many players that involves putting Paladin Danse's fate in your hands, and for some, the Brotherhood's operational ethics into question.

With all of that out of the way, notable rewards for becoming a Paladin include:

  • A minimum of 2,200 base EXP from all required quests.
  • An upgraded set of Power Armor; the T-60d variant.
  • Signal Grenades, which call in a Vertibird to help you in combat.
  • The T-60 Medic Pump mod for your Power Armor.
  • Your own, personal room in the Prydwen with lots of loot and storage containers.

1 Sentinel

A Surprising Workaround To Level Four Science And Armorer Perks

Becoming a Sentinel, the Brotherhood's highest attainable rank in Fallout 4, involves completing the last five main quests within the faction's questline. First, you'll have to raid and snuff out members of The Railroad for the Tactical Thinking quest.

Second, you'll have to head over to Mass Fusion to retrieve the Beryllium Agitator for the Spoils of War quest.

Also, make sure you grab the Strength Bobblehead from the fifth floor; another fine specimen for your growing bobblehead collection.

Third, pop that Beryllium Agitator into Liberty Prime, activate him, and follow him through the Commonwealthuntil you reachThe Institute. From there, Liberty Prime will blast a hole through the ground, and jumping into it will complete the Ad Victoriam quest.

Fourth, now that you're inside The Institute, you'll have to talk to Father one last time, override the lockdown, plant a fusion charge on the reactor, teleport out of there, and activate the detonator to end synth production for good. Boom, The Nuclear Option quest is complete.

Finally, return to the Prydwen, talk to Elder Maxson, and you'll have completed the last quest, A New Dawn, and earned the rank of Sentinel. Notable rewards from this rank include:

  • A minimum of 3,400 base EXP from all five quests.
  • A new paint style for your Power Armor to show off your rank.
  • The T-60 Jetpack mod for Power Armor; normally only achievable through level four Science and Armorer perks.
