Difference between ACI network centric mode and application centric mode (2024)

I would boil it down to this:
Network-centric design simply means having 1 bridge-domain per subnet and strives for 1 EPG per BD, so having many small BDs each mapped to a small subnet. So many BDs.
Application-centric design strives for 1 large supernet mapped to 1 BD. So just 1 BD or comparatively very few BDs.

As far as application profiles and endpoint groups:
With a network-centric design, you're probably best off going with 1 app profile per BD, since an EPG lives under an app profile and can be mapped to only 1 BD, if you already have an EPG1 mapped to a BD1 under an app profile, you can't then create another EPG1 in order to map it to a another, different BD2 (and subnet) under that same app profile. But you can do this across separate app profiles, say app profile 1, EPG1 to BD1 and app profile 2, EPG1, to BD2, though they are not the same EPG, they at least have the same names, though this is probably a non-issue in network-centric design, since for clarity in reading the configs, you'll probably want to put the subnets into the EPG names anyway, but it's good to know that you can duplicate EPG names across app profiles for mixed-use subnets if you really want or need to. This would technically be application-centric design but I view it as more of a hybrid in between pure 1BD to 1Subnet to 1EPG network-centric design and the full application-centric design. Or you could add a new vlan subnet to an existing BD, in order to add those new endpoints to the existing EGP. Or you could still add the new subnet under a new BD and new EPG, but group the EPGs under an endpoint security group, which will allow those EPGs to communicate to each other without any contracts, and migrate and apply EPG contracts to the ESG level to allow communication between that EPG group and other EPGs. Again, technically application-centric but to me the lines are blurry.

Some downsides to running network-centric design include smaller subnets that will run out of available IP space, thus needing to create new BDs and new app profiles and vlan pools for those BDs. and if you're using contracts, you'll want to duplicate any existing contracts from the similar older app profile EPGs into the new app profile EPG. You'll also probably run into some firewall problems as they'll probably already block access to the new BD's subnet for whatever access the older BDs have access to. And also sometimes you'll run into weird application dependencies such as the new servers can't cross layer 3 to talk to the older servers, purely out of application limitations, regardless of the network switch configuration.

With an application-centric design, every EPG is in a single BD supernet, so there's no need to worry about which subnet an EPG will map to. You don't need to create new or duplicate EPGs all the time across new and BDs and subnets. You don't need to create lots of app profiles, one per BD. App profiles can be created per application, not per BD. So fewer subnets, BDs, EPGs and app profiles to deal with. Automation is also streamlined since spinning up new enpoints is simplified with not needing to figure out which subnet and BD to use.

Some downsides to application-centric's 1 giant BD subnet are it's alot of work to almost impossible to migrate in legacy subnetted things over from a legacy datacenter, especially things that are being funneled through firewalls to filter traffic or serve as a security choke-point, since that would mean changing all the object IP addressing in the firewall configs to match the new ACI supernet that the hosts will migrate over to, not to mention all the other unknown configs and dependencies in all other deployed commercial applications, custom in-house applications, web filters, IPS, remote management tools, AAA server configs, etc. This is probably why most who plan to migrate old things into ACI deploy ACI in network-centric design vs. application-centric.

FAQs

Difference between ACI network centric mode and application centric mode? ›

While Network Centric mode considers traditional approach of retaining concept of Sub netting and using VLANs and VRFs. In contrast Application Centric approach hides traditional network related terminologies (such as VRFs, VLANs, and subnets).

What is the difference between application centric and network centric? ›

In short, the approach is called application-centric if the policies are created based on application details such as required port-for communication between the tiers, etc. The idea is to give the network administrator a view of the application, its connectivity & security requirements from the ACI controller.

What is application centric infrastructure ACI? ›

Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) is a software-defined networking (SDN) solution designed for data centers. Cisco ACI allows network infrastructure to be defined based upon network policies – simplifying, optimizing, and accelerating the application deployment lifecycle. Schedule a Demo Watch Webinar.

What is a network centric application? ›

Net-Centric is a way to manage your data, applications, and infrastructure in the cloud. Net-centric cloud computing can be considered an evolution of Software as a Service (SaaS). It leverages the power of the Internet to provide an environment for data, applications, and infrastructure on demand.

What is an application-centric approach? ›

Focusing on the application as the foundation or starting point. In an application-centric system, the program is loaded first, which in turn is used to create or edit a particular data structure (text document, spreadsheet, image, etc.). Contrast with document centric.

What is the meaning of network-centric? ›

A network-centric organization is a network governance pattern which empowers knowledge workers to create and leverage information to increase competitive advantage through the collaboration of small and agile self-directed teams. It is emerging in many progressive 21st century enterprises.

What is application centricity? ›

In the application-centric framework, data originates from an application silo and trickles its way down the value chain with little context. To extract value from this data is a painful or expensive process. Combining this data with other data is an almost impossible task.

What is Cisco ACI mode? ›

Cisco ACI is an application-centric infrastructure that enables you to build your data center network around the needs of your applications. ACI uses a centralized policy model to automate and simplify network configuration, deployment, and management.

What does ACI network stand for? ›

Cisco ACI - Application Centric Infrastructure - Cisco.

Is ACI network traffic separate from network traffic? ›

Basics of an ACI network

Software-defined networking (SDN) is essentially a software stack that separates the network control system from the traffic management system, enabling network components to be more interchangeable. ACI changes network infrastructure into a service.

What is the meaning of app centric? ›

App-centric refers to a view that provides visibility into an application's need in terms of resource requirements. It can be for example memory, CPU or bandwidth. This view is allows to capture the metrics that help ensure applications have the optimal resource level to run seamlessly.

What is application centric architecture? ›

Enterprise networking has shifted from focusing on infrastructure to concentrating on the delivery of the applications that help users do their jobs. Uncover how networking professionals view applications and how their jobs have changed as a result of a network-centric view.

Is Java a network-centric? ›

Java is a multi-platform, object-oriented, and network-centric language that can be used as a platform in itself.

What is the difference between network centric and application centric? ›

While Network Centric mode considers traditional approach of retaining concept of Sub netting and using VLANs and VRFs. In contrast Application Centric approach hides traditional network related terminologies (such as VRFs, VLANs, and subnets).

What is application-centric infrastructure? ›

Cisco ACI (Application Centric Infrastructure) is a software-defined networking solution, designed to help organizations manage complex environments by delivering network automation—increasing operational efficiencies.

What is the difference between app centric and data-centric? ›

Data-centric information systems have as their foundation slowly changing data. App-centric systems have as their foundation data that is in a constant state of change. It's this constant change that leads to data that is siloed and isolated and needs fixing/cleaning/integrating further along the information lifecycle.

Is Docker application centric or machine centric? ›

Application-centric. Docker is optimized for the deployment of applications, as opposed to machines. This is reflected in its API, user interface, design philosophy and documentation.

What is an example of a data-centric application? ›

Amazon is one of the best data-driven web application examples out there. It utilizes data to provide suitable product recommendations based on previous searches and buyer interests. They estimate what their potential customers will buy and when.
