Why is my CVV not validated? ›

What does transaction response code 82 - CVV Validation Error mean? The customer's card issuer has declined the transaction as the CVV is incorrect. The customer should check the CVV details (the 3 numbers on the back for Visa/MC, or 4 numbers on the front for AMEX) and try again.

A validation code—also known as a CVV, CV2, or CVV2 code—is a series of three or four numbers located on the front or back of a credit card. It is intended to provide an additional layer of security for credit card transactions that take place online or over the phone.

If your order failed and you received an error saying Decline CVV2/CID, the CVV code entered when you checked out is invalid. The CVV code is the three-digit code on the back of a MasterCard or Visa, or the four-digit code on the front of an American Express.

This can occur for a few different reasons: The 3-digit security code on the back of the Visa, MasterCard or Discover does not match what the card holder's bank has on file. For American Express this is the 4-digit code on the front of the card. The expiration date was entered incorrectly.

For Visa®, Mastercard® and Discover® cards, the CVV is a three-digit number, and it usually appears on the back of the card, typically next to the signature box.

Using the card's expiration date, PAN data, and PIN, a hardware security module can cryptographically validate CVV (in its many forms, including CVC, CID, CSC, CVC2, and CVV2) and determine if the card data presented is authentic for online or contact-free payments.

The card issuer checks the CVV2 code to determine its validity, and then sends a CVV2 result code back to the merchant along with the authorization decision.

In order to validate your code, you have to declare the standard to which it adheres. To describe the HTML standard (the document type declaration, DTD), the file should contain a DOCTYPE declaration (before the HTML code). Your card may be declined for a number of reasons: the card has expired; you're over your credit limit; the card issuer sees suspicious activity that could be a sign of fraud; or a hotel, rental car company, or other business placed a block (or hold) on your card for its estimated total of your bill.

What if I can't read my CVV code? ›

If you can't read the CVV number on your credit card, please contact Credit Card Services to order a new one. Once you have received your new card, you will be able to apply for Online Banking.

What does “CVV verification failed” mean? Most likely the three digit number on the back of a credit/debit card (or 4 digit number on the front of an American Express) was not entered correctly. It's best to try re-entering both the credit/debit card number AND CVV number.
