How long does it take for clare paint to dry? ›

While our paint is self-priming, we always recommend using primer before your two coats of paint for a pro-quality finish. Priming first also allows for the richest, truest color to shine through.

Pricing and samples

Clare sells its wall and trim paint for $59 a gallon, and its primer and ceiling paint for $42 a gallon, but you don't have to commit right away. Its 8"x 8" paint swatches are peel-and-stick, making it easy to instantly sample your top choices for just $2.

For a paint to be considered dry, enough solvents must evaporate so it feels dry to the touch. This means that the paint also has to cure. Paint doesn't cure, or reach maximum hardness, until days after the paint is dry.

Whereas, if the room you are painting is hot and dry (hello, toasty living room), both drying and curing time can be much faster. We'd recommend 5-7 days. Whatever the environment, we'd recommend waiting 5-10 days before you put any objects directly against your walls or hang any paintings.

When painting over dark walls with light paint colors, use a white primer. Using a primer will help to ensure that your color comes out true when dry, with no dark base color muting a light one or a light base color making it impossible to get bold color coverage.

If you're searching for a better paint for your home, choosing a VOC-free paint is a great first step. At Clare, all of our interior paint is zero VOC.

(FYI, one gallon of Clare's exterior paint can cover up to 400 square feet and one gallon of our Interior/Exterior Primer covers up to 275 square feet.) You'll want to double this amount for two coats, which we always recommend for the best coverage.

Flat, eggshell and satin paint are best for interior walls, whereas semi-gloss and gloss paint are best for trim and woodwork. Flat paint has a velvety, matte look and is the best choice to hide any wall imperfections. However, it's the least durable choice and doesn't usually stand up well to scrubbing.

Lapis lazuli, or natural ultramarine, is a rare stone used in art since Antiquity and found only in the mountains of modern-day Afghanistan and Iran.

For example, Umber and Sienna might dry in 2 days, but Titanium White can take up to 2 weeks. It's also worth noting that if you want to varnish your painting, we'd recommend waiting 6 months to make sure it has dried all the way through (this is known as curing).

As you paint, move the brush in every direction and all over the piece. Wait for the first coat to be touch dry. Depending on the climate, this could take 1-3 hours. Once dry, apply a second coat in the same manner.

Water-based paints generally take four hours to dry, while oil-based ones need a full day with open windows providing ventilation. If you have allergies or other respiratory issues, it doesn't hurt to give the paint a couple of days to fully cure before snuggling up in your freshly painted room.

In average conditions, your paint or stain will be dry to the touch within 1-2 hours, but you should not walk on it for probably 4-6 hours. In cooler weather or during periods of high humidity, you will need to wait even longer than this.
