About Rice

Rice in one of the most important food crop in the world essential for meeting global hunger. Ranking behind sugarcane and maze, it is the third most cultivated agricultural product in the world. It is the staple food in Asia and is increasingly becoming important in Africa and Latin America.

Rice is grown in over a hundred countries, with a total harvested area of around 158 million hectares, producing over 700 million tonnes every year (470 million tonnes of milled rice). Accounting nearly 90% of world’s production, 640 million tons of rice is grown in Asia. Sub-Saharan Africa produces around 19 million tonnes and Latin America around 25 million tonnes. In Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, almost all rice is grown on small farms of 0.5 to 3 hectares.

China despite having a low harvested area in comparison to India, ranks first in terms of rice production. The reason being higher yields as almost all of China's rice area is irrigated, while less than half of the Indian rice area is irrigated. Behind China, comes India as a major rice producer in the world which is followed by other main rice producing nations like Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand.

International Rice Market

Unlike maize and wheat, rice mostly tends to be consumed where it is produced and does not enter international markets. Yet the volume of international rice trade has almost quadrupled, from 7.5 million tonnes per year in the 1960s to an average of 28.5 million tonnes in 2000-2009. The current global rice trade stands at around 42 million tonnes.

The rice export market is highly concentrated, with the top five Rice Exporters accounting for 80% of world rice trade. Of the top five rice exporters, four (Thailand, India, Vietnam and Pakistan) are from Asia. Thailand has held the top spot for most of the past four decades. India is the largest rice exporter with a total of 26.3% of total rice exports in 2017. Thailand and the United States occupy the second and third positions with a total market share of 24.9%. and 8.5% consecutively. For Asian rice exporting

countries, rice is still the most important staple food, and domestic food security and strategic reserve are extremely important. In contrast to the heavy concentration on the export market, the import side is quite fragmented. The top five Rice Importers account for about 30% of total rice trade and the top ten account for less than 50% of total imports. Many of the major rice importers, including the top importer at present, China, are from Asia and account for a quarter of total rice trade. The other major importing regions are the Middle East and Africa, with almost half of the total world trade. These two markets are the fastest growing, with trade volumes doubling from 10 to 20 million tonnes over the past decade.

Types of Rice Shops

The global rice trade can be broadly divided into aromatic and non-aromatic rice. The aromatic rice market includes basmati and jasmine rice while the non-aromatic rice market includes white, parboiled and glutinous rice. In the case of the basmati trade, India and Pakistan are the top Rice Exporters, exporting 100% of this variety of rice to all regions of the world, with Middle Eastern countries being the main destinations, followed by the European Union. Over the past 15 years, global trade in basmati rice has grown from 1 to over 4 million tonnes, with India capturing almost all of the market expansion while Pakistan's market share has decreased from 50% to less than 20% during the same period.

For the jasmine rice market, Thailand dominated with a market share of almost 100% ten years ago. But, Vietnam and Cambodia have made significant inroads in the market in recent years, with Thailand's share falling below 50%. Vietnam has evolved into the biggest competitor for Thai Hommali jasmine rice, with nearly 40% market share. But, despite its growing market share, Vietnamese jasmine still commands a premium price in the market.

Besides selecting the major rice grade, the buyer can input other quality specifications such as rice length, rice whiteness, rice moisture, rice mix percentage (%), color of rice, etc.
