Why is Vantablack paint illegal? ›

There's a paint, a “material,” that an artist patented, and no one else is allowed to use it. Anish Kapoor bought the exclusive rights to Vantablack, the blackest black available to artists. (Feel free to insert a “Spinal Tap” joke here, if you are of a certain age.)

Culture Hustle's “BLACK 3.0” acrylic paint isn't technically darker than Vantablack, which absorbs around 99.96% of visible light.

Vantablack S-VIS and S-IR coatings are not supplied to private individuals. Many Vantablack S-VIS / S-IR applications do not require an export license. Because it's made of delicate carbon nanotubes that are more than 99 per cent empty space, Vantablack can't be touched without damaging the effect of the coating.

Vantablack is known for its ability to absorb almost all visible light, creating an illusion of depth without any texture. If applied to a car, it could give the appearance of a vehicle almost devoid of shape, contours, and texture, resembling a two-dimensional void.

Vantablack is not merely expensive, but exclusively available (for artistic purposes) to Kapoor. Further, Kapoor himself did not create the material, he just bought the rights to it.

Unfortunately, you can't just go out and buy Vantablack. It's grown using a patented process that can take up to two days and, ounce for ounce, it's more expensive than diamonds and gold.

When light strikes Vantablack, instead of bouncing off, it becomes trapped and continually deflected amongst the tubes, absorbed, and eventually dissipated as heat. CVD Vantablack was an improvement over similar substances developed at the time.

Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where duct is formed.

Only five years after Vantablack was discovered, MIT had found a black which is ten times darker. This new black captures 99.995 percent of all incoming light. Funnily enough, the scientists who discovered the new color were not trying to create the blackest black at all.

Looking at it the other way, Black 4.0 reflects 0.05% of the light, and Vantablack 0.035%. So Black 4.0 reflects about 40% more light.

So it takes in all the UV and heat and contains them, and can therefore reach heats well over 212 degrees Fahrenheit, boiling point of water. So if you did coat the pool in that material, the water would boil as soon as the sun touched it, killing everyone swimming in it. Oh, wow.

On the other hand, Vantablack is highly toxic (similar to asbestos), while Black 4.0 should be quite a lot safer.
