American Airlines Platinum Pro: What to Know - NerdWallet (2024)

American Airlines' AAdvantage loyalty program offers its members the following elite status tiers, in ascending order of earning requirements and perks offered:

  • AAdvantage Gold.

  • AAdvantage Platinum.

  • AAdvantage Platinum Pro.

  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum.

  • ConciergeKey, available via invitation only.

Platinum Pro delivers some substantial benefits, and thanks to the airline's new Loyalty Points program, there are plenty of ways to earn elite status beyond just flying.

American Airlines Platinum Pro benefits

AAdvantage Platinum Pro is American's second-highest advertised award tier (behind Executive Platinum) and includes the following perks:

  • Bonus earnings on rewards: Earn 9x AAdvantage miles on American flights, an 80% bonus over what members without status get.

  • Complimentary Main Cabin Extra and preferred seats: With extra legroom and free drinks on many flights, Main Cabin Extra is a nice upgrade within the economy cabin. Preferred seats are toward the front of the plane in economy but generally don't include the free drinks or added legroom.

  • Priority boarding: Board an American Airlines aircraft in Group 2.

  • Priority lanes: Use priority check-in and security lanes at the airport.

  • Admirals Club membership discount: Get a $75 discount on an annual membership to American's Admirals Club lounges.

  • Same-day standby priority: You and up to eight travel companions can stand by for another flight 24 hours before departure, prioritized above lower tiers and general members.

  • Complimentary same-day flight change: Confirm an earlier or later flight on the same day with the same routing without penalty, subject to capacity controls.

  • Priority bag delivery: Any checked bags will be tagged so that they arrive at baggage claim before others.

  • Oneworld Emerald status: Platinum Pro confers automatic Oneworld Emerald status, which gets you access to priority check-in lanes, preferred seating and standby priority when flying with American's partners in the Oneworld alliance. It also entitles you to visit first class and business class lounges when traveling on international long-haul flights, even on an economy ticket.

  • Unlimited complimentary upgrades: Platinum Pro members and a companion are eligible for upgrades to the next cabin of service on domestic American flights (including Alaska and Hawaii), as well as on flights from the U.S. to Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Bermuda and Central America. Platinum Pro upgrades clear based on availability starting 72 hours before departure.

  • Complimentary upgrades on Alaska Airlines: Platinum Pro members are eligible for first class upgrades on flights operated by Alaska Airlines as early as 120 hours before departure.

  • Waived baggage fees: Check three bags for free on American flights for you and any companions traveling on the same reservation.

  • Priority customer service: Get priority access to American's reservations agents when you call customer service at 800-433-7300.

How to get AAdvantage Platinum Pro

American's Loyalty Points system makes it possible to earn status from more than just flying American or its partners. You can also earn through credit card spending or hotel stays, among many other methods. (In fact, you don't have to fly at all to earn status.)

Platinum Pro status requires racking up at least 125,000 Loyalty Points during the 12-month earning period, which runs between March 1 of one calendar year and the end of February the next year.

You can earn Loyalty Points by:

  • Flying on American-operated flights as well as those of its airline partners, including some non-alliance partners.

  • Spending on one of the many AAdvantage credit cards.

  • Spending money with American's shopping and dining partners. These include using the AAdvantage eShopping portal or SimplyMiles (available to those with a Mastercard), using restaurants that participate in AAdvantage Dining, or making a hotel or car reservation with a partner.

Hyatt perks and other things to know about AAdvantage status

World of Hyatt benefits

American Airlines elites (Gold status and above) earn 1 bonus AAdvantage mile for every $1 spent at Hyatt hotels. These points are in addition to the 500 points per stay that AAdvantage members of any status can earn at Hyatt properties. To benefit from this partnership, you'll need to link your AAdvantage and Hyatt accounts.

No status matches available

American generally doesn't offer status matches, although it does occasionally sell status to members who may have previously held a certain elite tier. If you don’t want to pay the big price tag, you’ll need to spend and/or fly your way to achieving Platinum Pro.

American occasionally offers status challenges that require reaching certain flying and spending thresholds to earn or keep elite status.

Status lasts through the next qualification year

When you achieve elite status with American, including Platinum Pro, it lasts through March 31 of the following qualification year. For example, if you achieve Platinum Pro status on Dec. 1, 2023, your status will be valid through March 31, 2025.

Lifetime Platinum Pro isn't offered

Members can earn AAdvantage Gold for the life of the program after flying 1 million miles and AAdvantage Platinum after flying 2 million miles. But lifetime Platinum Pro is not offered. At 3 million miles, you receive four systemwide upgrades, but no higher elite status.
