6 Tips for secure online banking | Security Information | Solaris (2024)

Don't give cyber criminals a chance

You can carry out banking transactions quickly and comfortably around the clock with online banking. If you follow a few basic rules, online banking will be 100% secure.

Do not give cyber criminals a chance and protect yourself from fraudsters with the 6 tips from Solaris.

1. Pay attention to the correct URL

Always pay attention to the address line in your browser when conducting banking transactions on the Internet. The URL of your bank must always begin with "https". The Internet address of the respective bank must always be the same.

If you are on a page that looks correct but does not have a familiar address, cancel your login immediately.

The "https" in the Internet address indicates a completely encrypted data line. The additional "s" stands for "secure" - this means that it is a secure site of a registered organization.

The websites of Solaris's partners through which online banking is possible are always TLS-encrypted. This encryption ensures that no one reads, changes or copies your data during transmission.

2. Use a secure password

Do these passwords sound familiar: 123456, 12345678, QWERTY, and abc123. You are not alone, as these are the most popular passwords worldwide. Of course cyber criminals know this, too.

Do not give fraudsters a chance and choose a secure and, most importantly, unique password for online banking. Never use the same password as for your computer or smartphone. Your or a relative's date of birth is also not recommended.

Here are all the tips on how to create a secure password.

3. Pay attention to the lock symbol

The lock symbol in the address bar of your browser indicates whether your data is being transferred securely. The lock must always be displayed closed for this.

  • In Firefox, a lock appears in the address field, where you can click to display the website verification for the Internet page. This site is trusted and the data transfer is encrypted.

  • In Internet Explorer, the address field is entirely green - you get all the information about the website identification at the right end of the input field (key icon). There you will also find the security certificate for the called website.

  • In Chrome, the lock icon is located in front of the website address. Click on it to get more information about secure data transmission.

4. If in doubt: Abort online banking

If your browser shows that a key could not be successfully verified when connecting to the pages of one of the partners of Solaris, select "Cancel" immediately. Without verification there is no guarantee that the connection is secure.

Please report such an event immediately to the Solaris Customer Support Team or directly to our partners. All necessary information can be found here → Support.

5. Set a transfer limit

Set up a daily transfer limit in your online banking settings to prevent the entire account from being looted in a worst case scenario.

If cyber criminals do empty your account, banks – including Solaris – usually reimburse the damage. Our customers can trust in our service.

6. Log out of your online bank account

Always use the "Logout" function for pages that can only be accessed by logging in, such as access for your online bank account.

It is not enough to simply close the browser window. The data connection is only reliably interrupted by using this function.

This is especially important if you are using a computer to which several people have access or if you are surfing the Internet on a public network.
