What official UK coins are due for release in 2024?
The Royal Mint's release schedule is a closely guarded secret but we can reveal a comprehensive list of the new coinage available next year.
Some upcoming issues are part of ongoing series or have already been featured in 2024 annual sets. We know about others from royalproclamations, published in The Gazette: the UK government's journal of record. These formal announcements contain information submitted to the Privy Council before coins are put into production. They can be a little vague but we can tell from the details provided that there are some interesting new collectors coins in the pipeline.
The list includes additions to the Harry Potter range and a new Winston Churchill £2 as well as 50ps, £5s, Sovereigns,Britannias and perhaps even a new Great Engravers coin ...
Here are the full details on the UK coins that we know will be released in 2024.
Royal Mint 2024 UK Annual Sets
Just after New Year 2024, The Royal Mint officially released their 2024 Annual Sets, featuring five new commemorative coins. These sets are on sale now and include the:
- 2024 Buckingham Palace £5
- 2024 Sir Winston Churchill £2
- 2024 National Gallery £2
- 2024 Team GB 50p
- 2024 RNLI 50p
The five new commemorative coins included in 2024 UK Annual Sets from The Royal Mint including the RNLI 50p.
These five coins are not yet available outside of annual sets, but may well be released individually later in the year. We have more details on all of these 2024-dated coins below.
2024 Annual Sets are available in brilliant uncirculated, proof, premium proof, silver, piedfort silver and gold. Most of these sets also contain eight definitive coins featuring new nature-inspired reverse designs.
New UK definitive coin designs from The Royal Mint were also included in 2023-dated collectors sets and will soon be in general circulation.
New Harry Potter Coins For 2024
At least one new Harry Potter coin is confirmed for 2024.
The first coins in this highly-anticipated collection were unveiled in 2022 to mark 25 years since J K Rowling's first book was published. So far we have seen designs featuring The Boy Who Lived, Hogwarts Express, Albus Dumbledore and Hogwarts School on an extensive range of 50p and ounce coins, inspired by Jim Kay's illustrations.
The fifth addition to the series will feature an image of Harry Potter riding a broom, trying to catch a flying key with the inscription 'THE WINGED KEY'. Winged keys are one of the challenges Harry faces in the final chapters of The Philosopher's Stone. Perhaps other scenes from the first book or later novels will be shown on future releases.
According to the proclamation, the Harry Potter Winged Key design will be available on gold, silver, silver piedfort and base metal 50ps as well as 1oz silver coins.
A Winged Key design will join the Royal Mint's official licensed Harry Potter collection in 2024, joining other 50p and ounce coins in this range, including this 2022 25 Years of Magic coloured silver proof edition.
RNLI 200th Anniversary Collection
In March 2024 the Royal National Lifeboat Association will celebrate its 200th anniversary. The RNLI provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coastline of the UK and Ireland, saving lives at sea and raising awareness. The charitable organisation has enjoyed royal patronage since its foundation in 1824.
The Royal Mint's2024 lifeboat coins, already included in 2024 Annual Sets,feature the RNLI flag, encircled by a lifebuoy with the inscription '200 YEARS' and the anniversary dates: 1824-2024. The design is by veteran coinage artist John Bergdahl. A royal proclamation indicates that this design will be adapted for 2oz and 1/4oz gold coins in addition to therange of 50pcoins included in Annual Sets.
Predicted release date for individual coins: 24 March 2024.
The new 2024 RNLI 50p coin shows a Kisbee life ring and the crown and anchor flag found on RNLI lifeboats.
National Gallery 2024 Anniversary Coin
2024 Annual Sets also include a new£2 coin celebrating the 200th anniversary of The National Gallery.
The art museum, now based in Trafalgar Square in central London, was opened to the public on 10 May 1824. The National Gallery's collection includes 2,300 paintings dating from the 1200s to the 1900s, telling the story of British and European art.
Designed by engraver and printmaker Edwina Ellis, these Two Pound coins are authorised for minting in gold, silver, silver piedfort and base metal. They feature a depiction of The National Gallery's iconic neoclassical columns with the inscription '200 YEARS OF THE NATIONAL GALLERY'. Some editions have an edge inscription that reads '· MAIORVM GLORIA POSTERIS LVMEM EST'.
Predicted individual release date: 10 May 2024.

The National Gallery, located in Trafalgar Square, features on 2024 coins from The Royal Mint, issued to celebrate the art museum's 200th anniversary.
2024 Team GB Olympic Games 50p
The 2024 Summer Olympics open in Paris on 26 July 2024, followed closely by the 20242024 Summer Paralympics. This international sporting event will be the biggest ever held in France with Team GB joining thousands of athletes from around the world to take part.
To celebrate, The Royal Mint has included a new 2024 Team GB 50p in their Annual Sets, featuring a design by digital mosaic artistCharis Tsevis. This showstwo athletes running, set against the Union flag. A tiny Eiffel Tower can be seen below while the male athlete sports an artificial leg.
These new Olympic 50ps have been authorised in gold, silver, silver piedfort and base metal.They are far from the first Olympic coins from The Royal Mint who released an extensive range of 50ps ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.
Predicted release date: summer 2024.
The new 2024 Team GB coin celebrates the 2024 Paris Olympics and joins a range of previous Royal Mint coins, issued to celebrate the Games.
Winston Churchill 150th Birthday Range
Wartime Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill became the first non-royal person to feature on British coins when a commemorative Crown was issued to mark his passing in 1965.
30 November marks 150 years since the great statesman's birth in 1874. To mark the upcoming anniversary, The Royal Mint have released a Churchill £2 coin in their 2024 Annual Sets, designed by Natasha Seaward. These coinsshow the statesman in his youth, during his time serving with the 4th Queen's Own Hussars. The legend reads '150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF WINSTON CHURCHILL' with the dates of this birth and death on either side of the portrait.
These 2024 Churchill Two Pound coins are authorised for issue in gold, silver, silver piedfort and base metal with a portrait of King Charles III to the obverse.
Predicted individual release date: 30 November 2024.
2024 marks the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill's birth and The Royal Mint is issuing a new £2 coin to celebrate.
Buckingham Palace Five Pound
Buckingham Palace, the London home of Britain's Kings and Queens, is also the subject of a2024 collectors coin.
The royal residence was built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 and was acquired by King George III in 1761. The palace was considerably enlarged in the 19th century, adding the balcony on which the royal family traditionally appears to wave to the crowds.
The new Five Pound coinhas been issued in gold, silver, silver piedfort and base metal as part of sets. The reverse, designed by Henry Gray, features the instantly recognisable east wing public façade, encircled by a decorative motive inspired by the pattern on the balustrade from the Palace's Grand Staircase. Thetext below reads 'BUCKINGHAM PALACE'.
It is still unclear what anniversary this coin is being issued to mark but we are sure to find out soon.
Buckingham Palace is King Charles III's official London residence and has now been featured on a 2024 Five Pound coin from The Royal Mint.
New Dinosauria Collection Coins
It looks like we will be getting three new Dinosauria coins in the coming months, featuring some very well-known prehistoric reptiles.
The Royal Mint's Dinosauria series was launched in 2020 and celebrates the role that British scientists played in dinosaur research. The collection is comprised of brilliant uncirculated and silver and gold proof collectors coins, produced in collaboration with the Natural History Museum.
The Dinosauria 50ps due for release in 2024 feature:
- Tyrannosaurus Rex with the inscription 'TYRANNOSAURUS CRETACEOUS' - released in January 2024
- Stegosaurus with the inscription 'STEGOSAURUS JURASSIC'
- Diplodocus with the inscription 'DIPLODOCUS JURASSIC'
These dinosaur coins will be available in gold, silver, piedfort silver and base metal.
Predicted release dates: spread throughout the year.
2024 Benedetto Pistrucci Great Engravers
Saint George has been a perennial presence on British coinage over the centuries, most famously appearing on the reverse of many gold Sovereigns in a design by Benedetto Pistrucci.
It's possible that Pistrucci's original Sovereign design will soon feature as the next coin in The Royal Mint's celebrated Great Engravers collection which recreates notable historic coinage designs. Previous releases have been inspired by the work of William Wyon and Thomas Simon.
A December 2023-dated proclamation teases a range of coins featuring:
'a depiction of St George, armed, sitting on horseback, attacking a dragon with a sword, and a broken spear upon the ground with the inscription “HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE”.'
This description matches the earliest version of Pistrucci's classic St George design very closely. If that is the design being restruck here, it looks set to appear on a premium range of 5kg, 2kg, 1kg, 10oz and 2oz gold coins, as well as 1kg, 10oz, 5oz and 2oz silver pieces.

New Saint George Bullion Coins
A new range of coins, alsofeaturing England's patron saint are due for release soon, described as 'a depiction of St George, sitting on horseback, attacking a dragon with a spear'.
This 2024 coin might be a continuation of the Myths and Legends series which has so far covered King Arthur and Robin Hood. It could also be a continuation of the Mint's 'Valiant' coin range which features St George slaying a fearsome dragon.
This new St George coin will be available as 1oz gold, 1/4oz gold, 1kg silver and 1oz silver bullion coins. How do we know these are bullion coins? The inscription provided in the St George proclamation is typical of Royal Mint investment coins, listing the weight and precious metal content. These words will appear as microtext: another feature associated with bullion coinage.
Predicted release date: unknown.
A New 2024 Britannia Design?
Are we getting a new Britannia design in 2024?
However, one Gazette proclamation refers to a range of premium bullion coins described as:
'a depiction of the figures Britannia and Liberty with the inscriptions “· BRITANNIA AND LIBERTY ·”'
We know that these are bullion coins because the proclamation states that the inscription will include weight and composition - a hallmark of investment coins.
The typical 'Standing Britannia' design is also referenced in the same proclamation and we know that this design will be used on 2024-dated bullion Britannias since they have already been issued.
As the design includes Lady Liberty, often used to symbolise the United States, these coins might be a separate issue entirely, celebrating the so-called 'Special Relationship' between the UK and the USA. Another coin featuring Sir Winston Churchill and Franklin D Roosevelt was proclaimed last year but never went into full production so perhaps this is another go at that concept.
New 2024-dated silver bullion Britannia coins from The Royal Mint feature the classic 'Standing Britannia' design by Philip Nathan.
New Additions To The British Monarchs Collection
It looks like there are three new British Monarchs coins due for release in the coming year.
The series celebrates our Kings and Queens with designs inspired by their historic coinage, adapted for new collectors pieces by The Royal Mint's design team.
The three kings featured on forthcoming British Monarchs coins are:
- Edward VI, the son of Henry VIII, who ruled from 1547 until his death in 1553
- James II, a controversial ruler, deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688
- George III, whose long reign saw the first modern Sovereigns struck in 1817
- George V, grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II, who ruled from 1910 to 1936
There are various coin portraits from these reigns that the Royal Mint could recreate though the inscriptions included in the recent Gazette proclamations could provide some clues.

A New D-Day Anniversary Coin?
2024 marks eighty years since the D-Day Landings.During the spring of 1944, over three million men gathered in Southern England, ready for the largest seaborne invasion in history, the first step to liberating the whole of Europe. Forces from the land, sea, and sky came together on 6 June, crossing the English Channel to the beaches of Normandy as part of a plan called Operation Overlord.
Both the 50th anniversary of this historic event as well as the 75th have been commemorated on UK coinage. Will The Royal Mint issue a new D-Day coin in 2023?
If so, we could expect a coin release on the anniversary date: 6 June.
2025 Gold Sovereign Family
The Royal Mint has issued a new gold Sovereign in most years since 1817. Given this, it's a safe bet that we'll see a new Sovereign range before the year is out since these coins are generally released late in the previous year.
The 2024 Sovereign, released in November 2023, features the classic St Geoge and the dragon design, paired with Martin Jennings' uncrowned portrait of King Charles. Previous Sovereigns have featured one-off designs, authorised to coincide with Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee, the commemoration of her passing and His Majesty's coronation.
What the 2025 Sovereign will look like is unclear (there is no proclamation available yet) but we can be confident that these sought-after coins will be available in sets and individual presentations.
